Have you ever imagined yourself living in an abandoned house?

Real estate, in general, has become a bit more inaccessible for young people year after year. And together with being more much conscientious, people nowadays are embracing the tiny house movement.

While these small structures can be relatively cheap for some, building them from scratch can ding others with some extra expenses. So what did this young lad do? Bought an abandoned shed in his neighborhood.

George Dunnett, explains in his video about three uninhabited cobblestone houses in the area.

One of them is more of a shed. A single floor structure with a big door and no windows. He said that he doesn’t know who owns the structure or what’s inside of it.

The next one is a historical place. It was the house of Michael Bruce, a Scottish poet. It’s also the village’s museum.

Finally, he shows a small shed-like structure. It has a large sliding utility door, maybe a way to store materials or whatnot, and a second floor with a window. He shared that it’s basically untouched for over five decades.

Dunnett bought the house as his first home.

The house has definitely seen better days. The stone walls were cracked and molded and the first floor is just a room with dirt floors. The stair is basically a skeleton, but it’s still safe to use.

Dunnett quickly got to work. They filled the cracks with stone and cement and hammered out the large utility door. Then, they built a wall with two windows in its place. They also raised the roof a little bit to open up the second floor.

Once the foundational work was done, they began building the interiors.

The house’s floor plan is an inverted one. The bedroom and bathroom are on the first floor, while the kitchen, living room, and small dining room are on the second floor.

The palette they used is white for the walls with accents of light wood to make the place brighter. Even at its size, the house still got complete amenities.

The bathroom has a shower closet and a sink. His bedroom fits a queen-sized bed and low cabinets under the two windows. These windows allow the room to be filled with natural light which is perfect for a sleeping area.

The upstairs area serves as the house’s multi-purpose area.

It has a couch and space for TV where he can hang out with friends. The kitchen is also equipped with cupboards – some of them are narrow to maximize the space. On the counter’s end is his dining area with two stools.

The outside area, meanwhile, was done with his dad’s help. They placed a cobblestone “porch” so that it can match the surrounding area.

They also hung pictures of what the house used to look like so guests can see the changes the house underwent. All in all, it was an amazing build that looks cozy even with the limited floor area. It’s a great starter home and a great build to learn from.
