Meet Steph, a wife and a mom of four beautiful children.
She’s laundering loads for 6.
She lives on a 5th-generation homestead.
This is where she learned so many of the skills that she’s using today. In a viral video, Steph explains why she always makes liquid laundry soap.
For her, those in the market sold as “clean and non-toxic” are actually greenwashed products.
What is greenwashing?
Greenwashing is when a company claims to be environmentally friendly in order to attract more customers.
However, their efforts don’t actually have any beneficial effect.
This made Steph think of another approach. Aside from saving money, she is 100% sure that what she uses is environmentally friendly and non-toxic.
She claims that all her laundry comes out clean and smells fresh.

Here’s how she makes liquid laundry soap.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 6 ounces of Castile Bar Soap
- 1 cup of Borax
- 5-gallon clean bucket
- 1 cup of Super Washing Soda (Washing Soda is not the same as Baking soda)
- essential oils or a handful of fresh herbs (this is optional)
- Big mason clean mason jars with lid
- Cheese grater that you’re not using for food
This recipe makes 5 gallons.
The steps are as easy as 1,2,3.
First, you have to heat about four cups of water or a fragrant herbal infusion (keep reading for more on that).
Make sure that your stove is on low-medium heat. While waiting, you can start grating 6 ounces of Castile bar soap and set it aside.
Once ready, you can now add the grated soap and stir occasionally until all the soap is melted.
Fill a 5-gallon bucket halfway with hot water, not boiling water.
Then, add 1 cup of washing soda and 1 cup of borax.
Stir until everything has dissolved.
Next, pour the melted soap mixture into your gallon bucket and continue stirring until everything has been mixed.
Once you’re done, top the gallon bucket off with hot water until filled to the rim. Put the lid on and allow your solution to rest.
Let it sit for 24 hours.
After a day, your liquid laundry detergent is ready to use.
It’s best to transfer some in a mason jar and refill when needed.
Notes:
- The solution will look cloudy or may also have some gel. Depending on the soap you’ll use.
- Mix your soap solution before using.
- Use 1/2 cup per load of laundry.
What’s an “herbal infusion”?
You might be wondering about the herbal infusion. It’s an optional step that you could use if you have readily available herbs such as lavender, mint, or lemon balm.
You just have to make this one day in advance.
Start by picking up fresh herbs and add them to a quart jar. Then top it off with hot water, seal it, and let it rest for several hours or a day.
Strain your herbal infusion through a cheesecloth and that’s it. You can also use essential oils if you want to.
The price? Steph says it’s around two cents per gallon, and nothing could beat that.
