When you’re a kid all you want is a secret hideout. You read stories of secret libraries, hallways, and lairs and you just think of how cool it would be to have one for yourself.
They want to live in a fairytale.
Everyone has heard the story of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe from The Chronicles of Narnia. And that gave kids the idea that something as simple as a piece of furniture could take you to other worlds. This mom understood how her child felt and decided to do something about it.
Sylvia is your average 12-year-old girl.
She has posters on her wall, stuffed animals on the bed, and not much decor or paint on the walls of her bedroom. It looks fairly simple and kind of small, but it is hiding something.
Sylvia gives us a short tour of her room so we can see everything, but she pauses at the wardrobe. Instead of hanging all of her clothes, there’s a secret passageway like something out of the famous Chronicles of Narnia books.
She steps through and is transported to another room- one with a little more flair.
Her mom explains that Sylvia’s room was originally really small and didn’t even have a closet. However, right on the other side of the wall was the master bedroom, which did have a closet- a big one.
Like any good mother, she donated her closet to her daughter.
Sylvia’s parents walled off the entrance to the closet in their room and made a small entrance to the closet from Sylvia’s room. But they didn’t like the idea of a typical door.
Her mother found an old armoire on Craigslist for $250 and brought it home.
The armoire is the perfect size. Compared to her mother, the wardrobe is as tall as her she is so the opening isn’t small like you would expect.
Sylvia’s mom easily climbs through to the closet to show us what else she did to complete her project.
Lucky for them the small room was already wired and had a light in it. They also put up wood paneling to make the room look more like a room and less like a closet, something her mom says is a cheap affordable option if you’re looking to cover a wall.
This mom gets it.
Sylvia’s mom has created a private space for her daughter. The girl can hang out in the space, read, or do homework, however she wants to relax. She even sleeps in there! What’s even nicer is that she doesn’t have to give up her full room.
Just outside her armoire door is her full bedroom, so that as Sylvia grows up and possibly loses interest in her hideaway, she still has a full space to call her own. I don’t know who would want to turn a secret hideout into a closet, but she always has the option to!
