According to Wikipedia, a “laneway house is a form of housing that is gaining popularity on the west coast of Canada, especially in the Metro Vancouver area. These homes are typically built into pre-existing lots, usually in the backyard and opening onto the back lane.”
Taking advantage of extra space in their backyard, a mother-daughter duo decided to design a laneway house of their own – and it’s amazing.
Designed by the mother and daughter, and built by Smallworks, the adorable tiny home is just 620-square-feet. “This is the quintessential Laneway House. It possesses all the elements fundamental to a small home. The house is liberal with its floor plan, with a focus on single level living. It has one bedroom, a large open space for living, dining and cooking, and a smaller workroom,” Smallworks boasts.
Step through the tiny home’s arched doorway to the tiled entryway and foyer.
Tucked away at the end of the hallway is a closet that hides coats and purses, as well as a stacked washer and dryer. The home’s arched hallway matches the arched front door.
Guests immediately walk into the home’s bright and modern kitchen with gorgeous hardwood floors.
The mother and daughter really wanted to have an emphasis on entertaining in the backyard home, and the open-floor plan accomplishes this goal. The kitchen features white cabinetry and stainless appliances. There is a large island for friends and family to gather, and a recessed skylight that lets in lots of natural light.
Even though the home is tiny, it still features all of today’s modern amenities.
The kitchen features an oven and stove, small dishwasher, microwave, and refrigerator. Seafoam colored tile makes for a beautiful backsplash and the farmhouse sink is a lovely touch. Notice the industrial, simple light fixtures as well.
The kitchen flows directly into the dining nook and then the seating and lounge area.
Additional skylights flow along the vaulted ceiling, giving the illusion of much more space than there really is. When ‘living tiny,’ a great way to make rooms feel bigger is to take advantage of vertical space.
The seating and lounge area has a sleek gray sofa and fun, modern decor.
Guests can relax in the laneway home’s comfy living room that sits next to glass French doors, The lounge area features neutral colored furnishings with a pop of color and pattern with the throw pillows and two area rugs.
The bedroom is elegant and feminine with blush colored walls and a crystal chandelier.
The simple and charming bedroom doesn’t feature a lot of furniture or decor, but it’s certainly not lacking in character or romance. The sill of the window has been recessed a few inches, almost mimicking a bay window, and the yellow and light brown linens look beautiful against the link pink.
The bathroom is located conveniently off the bedroom.
Much like the kitchen, the bathroom features white cabinetry and black countertops. However, instead of the aqua colored tiles, the mom and daughter opted for classic white subway tile. An elongated vanity mirror adds length to the room.
Remember those French doors near the seating area? They open up to a deck with patio table and chairs.
“It responds to its site and context by integrating with the main house around a combined outdoor space, and using materials and colours that match the existing house. This home speaks to its neighbourliness through its quiet presence rather than drawing attention to itself: the perfect neighbour. It feels like it has always been there,” Smallworks says of the home.
The mother and daughter couldn’t be happier with the outcome of their home built by Smallworks. To see more of their projects, head over to their website.
