The movie industry is known for bringing together attractive people to act out love stories. So, it’s no surprise that real-life romances often start on set, even when one or both people are already in relationships. The following films played a big role in ending some of Hollywood’s most famous romances and starting new ones.
The Rum Diary
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, one of the most notorious Hollywood couples of the 21st century, met on the set of *The Rum Diary* in 2011. Soon after, Depp ended his long-term relationship with Vanessa Paradis. He married Heard in 2015, but just 15 months later, Heard filed for divorce, leading to a highly publicized and messy breakup.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie met while filming the 2005 action rom-com *Mr. & Mrs. Smith*. At the time, Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston, and Jolie had recently divorced Billy Bob Thornton. Pitt’s marriage to Aniston soon ended, and he started a long-term relationship with Jolie. The couple married in 2014 but divorced five years later.
Days of Thunder
The 1990 race car drama *Days of Thunder* is best known for being the movie where Tom Cruise, still married to Mimi Rogers at the time, met Nicole Kidman. Reports suggest Cruise and Rogers’ marriage was already in trouble, and meeting Kidman hastened the end. Cruise and Rogers divorced shortly after, and Cruise married Kidman later that same year.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson married in 1989 and co-starred in four films. When Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor met on the set of *Cleopatra* in 1963, both were married—Burton to Sybil Williams and Taylor to Eddie Fisher. Their tumultuous romance quickly became legendary. They married in 1964, divorced in 1974, remarried in 1975, and divorced again in 1976.
The Misfits
Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe, an unlikely pair, married in 1956. Their turbulent marriage—Miller’s second and Monroe’s third—ended during the production of *The Misfits* in 1961, which Miller had written. The film’s troubled shoot was exacerbated by Monroe’s struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues. She divorced Miller just before the movie’s release.
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Clint Eastwood married Maggie Johnson in 1953, but they separated in 1975 during the filming of *The Outlaw Josey Wales*, when Eastwood began a relationship with co-star Sondra Locke. Locke became his muse for a while, but Eastwood’s divorce from Johnson wasn’t finalized until 1984, and by then, he was already involved with several other women behind Locke’s back.
Gigli
In 2003, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck co-starred in the critically panned comedy *Gigli*, which not only became known as one of the worst films ever but also sparked the high-profile ‘Bennifer’ romance. At the time, Lopez was still married to her second husband, Cris Judd.
Green Lantern

To Have and Have Not
During the making of the 1944 film *To Have and Have Not*, 44-year-old Humphrey Bogart was married to his fourth wife, Mayo Methot, while 19-year-old Lauren Bacall was a newcomer in Hollywood. An affair developed, leading Bogart to divorce Methot and marry Bacall. The couple remained together until Bogart’s death in 1957.
Titanic
James Cameron, known for his blockbuster films, has had a rocky marriage history. By 1997, he was married to his fourth wife, Linda Hamilton, who starred in *Terminator*. After developing a close relationship with *Titanic* actress Suzy Amis, Cameron divorced Hamilton in 1999. He married Amis in 2000, and they are still together.
The Getaway
When Steve McQueen met Ali MacGraw during the filming of the 1972 thriller *The Getaway*, there was undeniable chemistry between them, even though both were married at the time. McQueen soon divorced his first wife, Neile Adams, and MacGraw followed suit by divorcing producer Robert Evans. They married in 1973 but divorced by 1978, two years before McQueen’s death.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
After divorcing his first wife, Lena Gieseke, in 1991, director Tim Burton started a relationship with Lisa Marie, whom he cast in several films, including *Planet of the Apes* in 2001. He also cast Helena Bonham Carter in the same film, and after developing feelings for her, Burton ended his relationship with Lisa Marie.
Snow White and the Huntsman
At the peak of her *Twilight* fame and while dating co-star Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart starred in *Snow White and the Huntsman*. During filming, she had an affair with the film’s director, Rupert Sanders, who was married to model Liberty Ross at the time. Both Sanders and Stewart later issued public apologies for the affair.
Street Fighter
While married to his fourth wife, Darcy LaPier, Jean-Claude Van Damme starred alongside Australian singer and actress Kylie Minogue in the 1994 film *Street Fighter*. In 2012, Van Damme remarked, “It would be abnormal not to […] She’s so beautiful…” His marriage to LaPier ended in divorce in 1997.
Star Wars
