If you’re walking down store aisles looking for products to keep your home smelling fresh, you’ll likely only find options that are filled with chemicals. But you shouldn’t have to choose between having a house that smells good and filling it with harmful chemicals.
The good news is that you don’t have to! Here are some natural DIY ways to have your house smelling fresh and clean.
Vanilla Lightbulbs
Place a drop or two of vanilla extract onto your lights bulbs when they are turned off. Once you turn them on the bulbs will heat up and make your house smell beautiful.
Baking Soda Air Freshener
The best things about this air freshener are that it’s portable and can be placed in any room of the house. It also both absorbs smells and replaces it with a good one.
Get a mason jar and fill it with a half cup of baking soda and a few drops of essential oil. Poke some holes in the lid or tape some cardboard to the top that has holes in it. The baking soda will suck the stink out of the air and replace it with whatever scent essential oil you chose.
Febreeze
Mix 1/4 cup of fabric softener with 4 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 cup of hot water. Let this mixture sit and dissolve for about a half hour. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle. The mixture can be used to freshen up your furniture, drapes, clothing, rugs, and other fabrics in your home.
Fruit and Herb Simmer
This method will leave a sweet scent that will permeate throughout your entire house. Boil a pot of water and toss in essential oils, fruits, and herbs. After about three minutes, let the pot simmer.
The scent will fill your entire kitchen and surrounding rooms and should linger for a while. Some good fruit herb combinations are lavender and grapefruit, lemon and rosemary, or orange and cinnamon.
Carpet Deodorizer
Carpet fibers are notorious for trapping stinky smells. You can make your own carpet deodorizing powder by mixing 1/2 cup of borax, 1/2 cup of baking soda, 30 drops of essential oil or 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon or cloves.
Sprinkle the powder on your carpets and rugs and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before vacuuming it up. This will suck up any bad smells and leave your carpet smelling fresh.
Gel Jar
Fill a jar with about 30 drops of essential oils and some food coloring. Then, make a packet of gelatin according to the instructions. This usually involves mixing the powder packet with some hot or boiling water. Once you’re done pour the gelatin solution into your jar, let it sit and harden overnight. This will look pretty and smell great.
