Couple turns family’s old barn into a striking rustic/contemporary modern home
I love old homes and barns, but I equally love modern architecture and design - and they blended both so well.

We’ve seen old school buses, worn-out houses, and even trailers turn into homes, but what about an old barn?

Houzz TV shared a special feature that garnered them over 2 million views on YouTube.

Andrew Towne and Crystal Madrilejos both grew up together in Medina, Ohio. They met when they were in elementary school.

They dated in high school, and after college, they moved back to their hometown to get married and start a family.

When they had their first child, they felt they needed to move into a bigger home, and that’s when Andrew’s parents told them they could renovate the barn.

Andrew’s parents had a 50-acre property, and there was a big but old barn there.

When Andrew was just a kid, he recalled visiting and seeing horses. So, thinking about turning this old barn into a cozy home came as a surprise.

The couple talked about it and soon thought the idea wasn’t so bad. So they called an architect, who was also a family friend and started there.

Then, they also sought the help of Tim Franklin of Designer and Builder, an expert in restoring historical structures, barns, and so much more.

After showing him their plans, Franklin immediately said yes to the project.

According to Franklin, the first step was analyzing the structure and whether it was still okay to be turned into a home; after that, they talked about the design elements, layout, and how they could keep the structural integrity but also make the house good looking.

They also got many ideas through Houzz and chose a rustic yet contemporary blend theme.

As you enter their spacious home, you’d be greeted with a grand stairway divided into two.

To the left is their living room, and to the right is the kitchen.

A reading nook is under the staircase going to the loft area.

The loft area was an outstanding idea because they got another space and could enclose the kitchen.

All of their bedrooms are located downstairs.

Everyone who has seen the house couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the barn frame was. It was well-persevered and really sturdy.

They also decided on top insulation panels over the roof outside, but what about the bank of the barn?

If you see the house, you’d think the bank had always been there, but it was actually man-made.

It was a wall that was backfilled with sandstone.

For the couple, it’s nice to live in such a spacious and cozy home, but the best part?

Their kids could actually learn how to climb trees, play outside, and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Andrew also said he had planted trees, hoping that one day, his children will go back there and live in the same house.

He wanted them to have plenty of trees, fresh air, and close to nature.

“It’s nice to know that we had this big goal for a really long time and that we made it happen, and also that we have a space that we can make our own,” said Crystal in her interview with Houzz TV.

Andrew and Crystal never thought they would return to their hometown, convert an old barn into an aesthetic home, and enjoy the familiar surrounding they have always loved.
