More and more people are resorting to alternative styles of living these days – whether it’s downsizing, renovating, or going off-the-grid, ideas seem to be reaching a new peak of creativity every day. People are building tiny houses and treehouses, as well as converting shipping containers and sheds, into homes of their dreams. This home, however, is unlike any you’ve ever seen.
First used in the 1950’s to lift and load heavy cargo onto vessels in the bay, this industrial crane is now a one-of-a-kind B&B.
Perched 26-feet off the ground over the Bristol Harbor in the UK, this unique dwelling is completely carbon neutral and was built by Canopy & Stars using sustainable materials.
The interior of the crane home is industrial meets rustic. The designers wanted to bring a bit of nature inside but did so with simplicity and elegance.
The sofa was strategically placed to look out over the Bristol waterfront and watch the boats pass by. A hammock sits at the far end of the home for another option for relaxation. The designers’ goal was to create a multi-sensory, nature-inspired sanctuary.
The kitchen is small but features a small sink with gorgeous tile backsplash.
The home, called Crane29, was rented out on a lottery basis and all proceeds went to a partner charity called Friends of the Earth. Just 260 lucky guests were able to experience an overnight’s stay in the historically renovated retreat.
A small dining area also looks out over the harbor. Perfect for enjoying a morning cup of coffee or tea.
Turquoise curtains give the room a pop of color and frame the large windows. Natural light keeps the crane home bright and inviting, no matter the season.
Nature can certainly be seen as the inspiration in the cozy bedroom.
Raw wood for the furnishings and bookcases, macrame decor, and living plants really bring an organic and peaceful element into the sleeping quarters. Canopy & Stars wanted to create a feeling of living in a treehouse. In fact, the bed was made out of a reclaimed tree trunk.
The eco-friendly bathroom sits behind a corrugated metal wall.
Just to the right of the kitchen, you’ll find the efficiently designed bathroom. Kept simple, Crane29’s bathroom boasts an electric shower and composting toilet.
Woodland scents waft throughout the home thanks to sage, lavender, and bark – truly creating the multi-sensory experience Canopy & Stars was trying to achieve.
