In the heart of Greensboro, North Carolina, lies Pomona Park, a place that’s become a beacon of hope for many.

Here, the pallet homes, a unique housing solution, have opened their doors to those in need.

With 56 beds available, 42 have already been filled, thanks to the efforts of the Interactive Resource Center (IRC), which collaborates with community agencies to find residents for these homes.

One of the residents, Adrian, shares his journey to the pallet homes.

“I’m blessed. It’s not the Taj Mahal, but I am blessed I’m here,” he expresses with heartfelt gratitude.

His story is one of resilience, having faced severe medical challenges that included six life-threatening surgeries and an extended period of living in his car.

Now, in pallet home #8, Adrian has found a safe haven and a community that supports him.

Terry Harrelson’s story is another testament to the impact of the pallet homes.

After spending two years homeless following an eviction, Terry found a new beginning in his pallet home.

His daily routine is simple yet significant – a walk to a nearby building for basic amenities, keeping his space clean, and visiting the IRC for additional support.

“You couldn’t ask for a better place. This is my first year, but I enjoy every minute of it,” Terry says, highlighting the comfort and security he’s found in his new home.

The role of the Interactive Resource Center is pivotal in this community.

Kristina Singleton, the executive director, emphasizes the importance of keeping residents connected to their familiar community.

The IRC offers transportation and access to essential resources like laundry, ensuring that the residents don’t feel isolated from the support systems they rely on.

As the sun sets, Terry’s routine includes tidying up his space, storing his belongings in a tote under his bed, and preparing for a restful night.

His evenings conclude with a prayer of thanks, a moment that captures the profound appreciation he has for his new life in the pallet home.

Beyond providing shelter, the pallet homes are a stepping stone towards a more stable future.

Case managers work closely with residents like Terry and Adrian, guiding them towards securing permanent housing.

This support is crucial in helping them regain their independence and rebuild their lives.

Adrian’s experience is a powerful reminder of life’s unpredictability.

“I don’t care what school you went to or where you were at in life, it can happen to anybody,” he remarks, shedding light on the indiscriminate nature of homelessness.

His story underscores the fact that anyone, regardless of their past, can face such challenges.

The success of the pallet homes project is evident, with residents already making progress in their lives.

One individual has successfully transitioned out of the pallet homes this year, a milestone that speaks volumes about the effectiveness of this initiative.

Despite this success, the need for such housing solutions remains pressing.

The IRC is nearing its fundraising goal, aiming to expand its services, including extending its operating hours to provide overnight support starting in December.
