Peppermint has definitely made its name not only for its amazing smell, but also for all of its amazing household benefits. Keeping a few peppermint plants around your home can keep pesky pests from sneaking in, or just to keep your place smelling fresh. An added plus is how easy this plant is to care for, regardless if you’re growing it indoor or outdoor.
Peppermint comes essentially in two popular varieties – black or white. Black peppermint has darker leaves and tends to have a stronger scent, whereas white peppermint is lighter both in color and aroma. Regardless of what type you choose, make sure you give your mint plenty of water and drainage. These home-helpers also enjoy partial to full sunlight so don’t be afraid to give your mint some extra sunshine!
Now that you know how to take care of your peppermint, let’s jump right into how it will take care of your home
1. Nature’s Natural Pest Repellant
Peppermint plants are a perfect way to keep away all of those pests you hate without using harmful chemicals. Like mentioned previously, keeping a few potted peppermints around can keep rodents and other creatures, such as flies and ants, at bay.

- Peppermint Plants – The simplest way to prevent a mice infestation from ocurring is to place peppermint sentires all around your home. Mice hate the smell of peppermint, and this will help keep them away from your precious home. You can plant them outside your home for protection, and you can use a fresh leaf whenever you cook.
- Peppermint Sock – This method is for those who want a quick solution. Place dried peppermint in a sock and tie it off. Then place the sock near holes, gaps, and other places where you might have pests gathering.
- DIY Spray – Shoshanna’s favorite method is a simple spray. Boil water, then steep dried peppermint in the same way you would tea. Once you get a rich concentration, strain the grounds and let the mixture cool. Finally, transfer to a spray bottle and blast away. Aim wherever you think pests may enter the home. Better yet, use this mixture as a way to clean your cabinets and furniture as it’ll also repel pests from those areas.
2. Keeping Your Pets Flea-Free
Get a few sprigs of peppermint and place it into a bag or pillow (something your pet won’t bite) and tuck it under or beside their bed. Peppermint can actually repel certain fleas and other bugs that might latch on to your four-legged friend.

Peppermint has a surprising amount of medicinal benefits, making it one of the most helpful plants for not only your home but also for your health. If your stomach is feeling upset, try drinking some herbal peppermint tea!
