“Po-ta-toes! Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew!“, so says Samwise Gamgee the brave to Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. See, if a Hobbit gives importance to potatoes during their quest to destroy the ring, then surely people should be growing them in their backyards.
Home gardeners can build potato towers and it’s not daunting. Anyone can do it!
Lorry did it!
She tried growing potatoes. Lorry goes to unearth her produce, hoping that she really did grow some. She got her seed potatoes in Iowa weighing in at a pound or two in a bag. Imagine all the fries.
Lorry opens up the fence and already, a few potatoes are visible. That’s just one little part of the tower too!
She removes some of the straw and dirt without getting any on herself or her immaculately white top. Like a kid opening presents on Christmas day, she exclaims in glee at the potatoes she digs out of her tower.
Lorry converses with the camera man who asks her about the tower but the lady is on automatic, pulling out potato after potato and tossing them in a basket. And it’s a lot.
She says she’s not sure how big the bag was so she’ll have to check but up to that point, Lorry’s still pulling out her treasure.
“It’s like a treasure hunt!”
On to the next layer.
Lorry wholeheartedly recommends this method for growing potatoes. Not everyone has the space to grow them the traditional way. Potato towers can go from two to four feet tall with cylinders of metal fencing. Fill it up with soil and line with straw and there’s the tower.
Just make sure the spot you choose gets a lot of sun. And remember that you’ll be watering so there should be a faucet or at least a hose within reach. Choose seed potatoes that are best suited to your region. A little research is in order.
An inspired viewer says,
“Thanks for sharing this video. This looks great and very easy to grow, does make me want to grow my own potatoes!”
Lorry admits that she wasn’t able to water them as much but since it had been raining a lot, it made up for her time away on a motorcycle ride. Cool lady. And she’s still digging!
Layer after layer, with a few short stories here and there, Lorry shows off her yield and do they look amazing! Lorry says she has a big family. More mouths to feed means more potatoes consumed.
And look at her basket! That’s about more than half. Not bad for her first try! Now how about a beer tower…
She has plans of installing an automatic sprinkler for those days that she’s not around. That means more potatoes. Bigger ones. And this was with two and a half pounds of seeds. Her yield weighed in at ten and a half pounds. Not bad!
Now imagine all the food you could cook with so much potatoes. Don’t forget to throw in a few days at the gym!
