Getting a stain doesn’t mean that you have to toss out your favorite new shirt. It also doesn’t mean that you have to take it straight to the dry cleaners. That’s because there is a DIY remedy for just about every common stain.

Wine

Pour a generous amount of salt over a fresh wine stain. The salt should absorb lots of the wine. To get the rest of the wine up, pour club soda on it and blot with a towel.

Lipstick

Spritz a lipstick stain with hairspray and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then dab it with a paper towel.

Grease

Grease can be the downfall of many blouses, but it doesn’t have to be. Pour some baby powder over the stain. After 30 minutes, use a toothbrush to get rid of the rest of the stain.

Sweat

Rub shampoo over your sweat stains and let it sit for five minutes and then rinse with cold water. You can also try to pour cold water on it. Then cover it with salt. You can wash it off after five minutes.

Nail Polish

Place your stain side down on a few sheets of paper towel then dab nail polish remover on the back of the stain. You can change out the paper towels as they get wet, then run the spot under cold water.

Paint

It IS possible to get paint off your clothes. First, dab up the acrylic or water-based paint with a paper towel and try to take up as much of it as possible. Then sponge the area with a solution that is one part detergent and two parts warm water until the stain is gone. Use the method for grease stains for oil-based paint.

Makeup

You can get rid of foundation makeup marks by rubbing the stain with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.

Blood

Soak your blood stain with a mixture of one cup of cold water and one-half teaspoon of salt for two hours. Then rinse the spot with one part ammonia and two parts water.

Dirt

To get rid of dirt stains, mix one part vinegar with one part water. Pour it over your spot and let it sit for five minutes. If it doesn’t work you can pour more of the solution on your spot then massage it with your fingertips.
