Home fires are a disaster on everything that it affects, but it especially hurts when items of sentimental value are irreparably damaged. Instructables user Wells1784 learned that his neighbor had suffered from a minor fire in their home, and decided to help them refurbish their precious furniture, including the ones that belonged to a woman’s grandmother.

Luckily, the first thing he noticed was that the smoke had affected the furniture, not the fire itself. It’s still somewhat difficult work, however!

To repair, he noted that he used the following materials: FURNITURE REFINISHER (Minwax or Formby’s work the best), FEED-N-WAX, QUART CUP, 00 / 0000 STEEL WOOL, CLEAN RAG, NITRILE GLOVES, HEAT GUN (for removing melted plastic of candles), DRILL GUN W/ WIRE BRUSH (Optional), ORBITAL SANDER, PASTE WAX, FACE MASKS, WD40 (for rusted metal)

He then took furniture refinisher, put it in a cup, and let the steel wool sit in the cup for about a minute. From there, he began to clean the burnt areas of the furniture items.
