Woman’s Home Is Narrower Than Her Arm Span, Step Inside To See How She Makes It Work
The history of the home and why it was built is quite the funny story.

A narrow, wedge-shaped house in Seattle was built in 1925, far before the hip ‘tiny home’ movement began. That’s because this house wasn’t built to be ‘cool,’ it was built out of spite.

There are apparently two versions of the ‘spite house’s’ story. One is that the owner of the neighboring home got a divorce and gave his wife just a small sliver of land, too small for what he thought she could build on – and she did.

The other version of the story is that the neighboring homeowner sold the slice of land to a new owner, assuming they wouldn’t build it on and they could pocket the money – but the house was, of course, built nonetheless.

Now, the unique ‘spite house’ belongs to a family that embraces its quirky history and one-of-a-kind architecture.

Let’s step inside and take a tour of the tiny home’s incredible design.

What might surprise you, is that from a side view, the house looks like a traditional home, and in fact – the home is 830-square-feet.

The home sits on a large corner lot and takes up the spot closest to the street. From this view, which is either the side or the front, depending on your perspective, you’d never guess how narrow the home really is – at the narrowest portion of the home, it’s only four and a half feet.

Opposite the narrowest point of the home is the rear side of the ‘spite house,’ where you can find a garage which has been converted into a guest space.

Let’s take a look inside the 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom home.

The 9′ x 14′ living room is welcoming and spacious. The neutral-colored walls make the small room feel much bigger.

Simple furnishings and decor keep the room uncluttered and inviting. Looking through the doorway you can see the master bedroom and upper-level bathroom entry in the far rear left.

The master bedroom matches the light, neutral colors in the great room.

The white trim and doors provide a beautiful contrast to the light brown walls. Large windows let in lots of natural light, and the room features an en-suite bathroom.

The simple and minimalistic theme continues into the master bathroom.

There’s nothing too fancy about the master bathroom, however, it has every amenity you could need. A gorgeous wood vanity with matching wood-framed mirror is the focal point.

Walking back through the living room, you’ll reach the small dining nook and galley kitchen.

The bedroom and bathroom side of the home is at the maximum 15 feet width of the home, and the kitchen’s backyard door becomes a narrow 4 and a half feet.

The charming, funky kitchen boasts vintage light blue countertops with modern appliances.

The kitchen might be a bit on the tiny side but it boasts a full-size stove range and oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher.

Downstairs, you’ll find the renovated second bedroom, bathroom, and guest space.

Accessed via stairs on the outside of the home, this separated guest space is perfect for when the in-laws come to visit.

Also downstairs is a small seating area for guests to grab a book, relax, and unwind.
