Home Sweet Home
The stage of retirement can bring about important changes in one’s life. It’s a time to enjoy creative projects or ideas and for some, it can be a little overwhelming. These days, not having the best plan may seem to be the best plan with an unstable economy and the constant expenses trickling down the list of bills can make it a pretty difficult challenge.
However, there are some folk out there, like Michelle “MJ” Boyle, who chose to make the best out of an opportune moment. A single mother of two, MJ had to really pull herself together to save up for an affordable, comfortable place to live. Luckily, she was determined to the end and was able to invest in a new tiny home to accommodate her.
The journey began when MJ noticed that she was overpaying for her current house. She devised a method to generate income and build the house without paying anywhere near as much as her current bill of $1600 a month.
Her home in Sherwood, Oregon was not allowing MJ to save up comfortable and as a result, she was stuck living paycheck to paycheck. Since her kids began preparing to make the switch to college, MJ realized it was time to take a risk and start doing what was best for her family.
“I built my first house, this house, basically using cash and sponsorships to make sure that I have a paid-for nice, comfortable house when I retire. Now I’m building a few more tiny houses that I look forward to renting like on Airbnb or a try it tiny or other VRBO kind of platforms and create some income so, that’s next.”
MJ calls her beautiful new home “Empty Nest”. She has been divorced twice and as a result, has lost her two previous homes due to the aftermath. “My life has been a series of unfortunate events. I have been divorced twice. I have built two houses and I lost the houses basically in the carnage of my divorces.” MJ is truly an inspiration for single mothers who really put in an extra effort every day to make sure their kids are protected and that nothing gets in the way of accomplishing their goal.
Less Can Be More
MJ joined the Tiny House Movement, which is aimed at encouraging more people to live a simpler lifestyle with less material. It’s a social movement trying to break the architectural foundations of having a traditional household. The movement has successfully been able to significantly reduce the cost of most homeowners and also alleviate financial and emotional responsibilities that some of these people may have.
It was definitely a bold move for MJ. It must have been incredibly worrisome to make such a decision especially when MJ’s kids were transitioning to the next stage of education in college. Fortunately, MJ put in a lot of work and dedication to have her dream come to a reality and she’s now enjoying the tremendous benefits of living in her tiny home.
MJ Is now happy with her tiny home. She has been able to slash her previous monthly bills of $1600 to just $75 a month in her new tiny home as a result of trimming down! Now that’s sure to pay handsome dividends when MJ starts saving up for her future. Make sure to check out a lovely tour of her amazing tiny home!
