Would you be up for living off the grid?

There are definitely some advantages, including much lower bills. But there are also downsides, like having to completely fend for yourself.

Living off the grid is an ideal that is spreading further every day.

The idea of being free to live life your own way has led to many taking dramatic steps to be truly free of materialism and public services.

While many of these projects are very personal journeys, Kris Harbour has been making videos detailing his journey with a tiny home nestled in some quiet woods.

Kris packed up from the big city to start his first big step.

Early in Kris’ video, he explains who he is and what led him to live in a tiny home in the woods. There was a point in his life when he decided that he had had enough of “modern-day” living and chose to make something simpler for himself.

He describes his journey as follows:

“Four years ago now, I moved from London. Sold all my possessions from London. Bought a piece of land from Wales. I built this little roundhouse.”

But Kris wants to show a portion of his daily routine before going into the home tour.

The video shows him leave his house on a chilly morning with the light just filtering through the Wales winter weather. He explains that he’ll get to the tour viewers were hoping for after he’s finished his morning chores, including feeding his chickens.

Kris’ cozy home in the woods is a lot more modern than you think.

Kris finally returns to his home for the grand tour, after handling his other morning chores. He begins with an interior show showing how cozy and well-lit his home is.

He’s got everything, from wireless internet to a fully functioning stove and log walls that he explains keeps his house secure from rain all year round.

The house even comes with heating and a wood-burning stove to keep the house nice and toasty all year round.

Part of his daily routine even involves collecting logs that he chops early so that he’s never without heat.

Some of his viewers expressed concerns over how sturdy and long-lasting log cabins could be. So he takes a moment to discuss it by saying:

“People have it in their heads that if you use wood with ingrain showing it will immediately rot and disintegrate…and it’s just isn’t the case.”

But Kris isn’t the only one who loves his little home. He points out where birds often come to nest during the year. He then points out a hidden spot by one of his windows where bats come to stay.

He doesn’t mind the bats since they get along.

But how does he keep his home powered all year round? It seems impossible since he mentions having a workshop, home, and restroom.

Kris answers those questions with a brief tour of his hydro-generator. By using running water and a turbine, he produces enough power on his own to charge everything he needs without any effort.

He does have solar panels as well but admits that there are certain times of the year where they don’t do any good.

After his tour, Kris sits down and talks with his viewers about his life.

He shares some insightful commentary that discusses more of why he’s lived the way he has and what he hopes to accomplish. Whether his story inspires his viewers to live off the grid or not, he’s happy to share his journey.
