After separating from her husband, 62-year-old Brigitte went to her friend’s house and stayed there as she looked for a new place to call her home.

While browsing the books her friend owned, the woman came across a book about tiny houses and this sparked an idea in her mind.

She read the book and found the beauty of living a minimalist lifestyle by owning a tiny home.

She immediately decided that this home idea is what she needed to have for herself.

Brigitte started her journey of building her own tiny home.

As a retired teacher, building a home is not exactly Brigitte’s field of expertise.

She never thought she could be building her own abode one day, and it was still unbelievable for her even as she was already slowly building one for herself.

But being a teacher also taught the senior that everything can be learned if you are serious enough.

So, she accepted the challenge she made for herself and started building her tiny home.

“At that time I was going to be 62 and I saw this as an opportunity, to do something which is totally different and that’s where it started, in reality,” she told Exploring Alternatives.

It took the woman a year to complete her research and to prepare for her new adventure.

Brigitte did not start her project hastily. Instead, the woman took her time in finding the right people to ask about the ways of building a home.

She continuously searched for tips and guides on how to handle the construction of her home, determined to do things right by herself.

After a year, the retired teacher finally started building her home.

It was fortunate that some people wanted to help her out.

One person even sold his trailer to Brigitte, knowing that she would need it while she worked on her tiny house.

Other people helped her in looking for contractors and manpower.

She was referred to a builder who was looking for work then, and she decided to hire him.

“I said, ‘You know what, I’d like you to be very precise, and I’d like you to teach me how to do it. It doesn’t have to go fast but I want to learn.’ And that’s what he did,” the retired teacher said.

Brigitte worked with the man for months.

They carefully built the tiny home based on Brigitte’s liking and their teamwork finally resulted in a successfully built abode.

The two of them built a trailer so Brigitte could easily bring her home anywhere she wanted to go.

The trailer measured 8 feet wide and 8 feet long and was the perfect tiny trailer home.

She made sure that there were beautiful windows where she could view her garden and the distant mountains while relaxing.

The living area also doubles as a kitchen, and it has the biggest open space in the home, making it look roomy and comfortable to move in.

Brigitte does not have running water, though, but she built a makeshift shower by using a holed bucket that she hung.

This is only useful during summer, so she visits her daughter during the winter so she can shower there.

She goes around town and to wherever she needs to go with her own electric bike, and she makes sure that she gets all she needs to live comfortably.

”We don’t need everything by ourselves. I feel this should be a normal way, how we can live together and learn to share. It’s not only good for the environment, it’s good for our pocket money, too. So that’s my approach to life in general,” she said.

The woman spent around $30,000 on her tiny home and she is very happy with the result.
