As the cost of living has gotten more and more expensive, people are starting to question some of their standard lifestyle choices. Is it worth it to get a huge house with a mortgage and a two car garage? Wouldn’t it be better to have some flexibility and save a little money? With these concerns in mind, the “tiny house” movement has recently gained a lot of traction—many millennials are trying to find living arrangements that are smaller, cheaper and more flexible.

Still, few people have a tiny house finished by the time they are 18 years old!

Annabel O’Neill decided to start building her tiny house when she was only 16 years old.

She posted many updates on her journey on her YouTube channel, livinglifefruitfully. In the first video, she details how she first got the money together to build her home—although she first did two years of research. She began by raising money online with sites like Go Fund Me and Indiegogo, collected donations and used her own savings. All told, her tiny home cost $13,000. The entire thing was a senior project for high school—and the results are pretty incredible.

From the outside, the home looks like any other small mobile home.

The inside is a wood-paneled, two level home which is as cozy as can be.

Though the inside is small, it is multi-functional and includes a broad slab of wood which serves as a sink and kitchen area.

On the opposite side is a comfortable living room area with plenty of pillows and a small fireplace.

The upper floor is a comfortable, lofted area with a bed—it even has a unique, pole-style ladder to climb to the upper floor.

Though the home doesn’t have a bathroom yet, it is equipped with plumbing and will eventually have a compostable toilet.

Above all, O’Neill’s project was an extension of her various political and ethical beliefs. Her goal was to promote a minimalist, vegan lifestyle which allowed her to live more in harmony with nature while still owning her own home, not being in debt and creating a mobile community. Needless to say, her project seems to have been a huge success!
