No matter where you live, the cost of living has risen in recent times. For a long time, the American dream has been to have a house with many bedrooms, a two-car garage, white picket fence and a spacious backyard where the dog can run around. For numerous reasons, this dream is less attainable and less attractive than it once was. Still, people obviously still want to live and to live well—and many have come up with creative ways of achieving their goals. One example is the “tiny house” movement, which has embraced minimalism and mobility over the typical status markers.
The house in this story below is a great example of just how much you can get for only a little bit of cash.
One couple was able to build their own home on wheels in four months—and it only cost them about 33 thousand dollars!
From the outside, this mobile home looks very modern with its square, asymmetrical windows and its shed-style roof. Still, it also has a rustic, classic feel with its wood paneling. All told, the home is 28 by eight and a half feet for a total of 221 square feet. Still, by lofting the sleeping areas, the couple was able to squeeze in another 128 square feet of sleeping space.
On the inside, it’s easy to see the use of the windows.
The entire home is very well-lit with a beautiful paint job, custom cabinetry and a comfortable sitting area which serves as a living room area.
Near the front is a home office area which has room for two people to work at—and it comes complete with a big window in front with a view of the outside. The area is surrounded by cork boards and tasteful storage space as well.
Besides that, the house also has a cabinet where the home keeps its hot water heater and other utilities hidden away.
One of the biggest highlights of the home is its full-size kitchen which takes up a major portion of the first floor.
It comes complete with a full gas oven, plenty of counter space (even for a normal home) and a full-size fridge and freezer as well. Although there are compromises to be made in a tiny home, this couple didn’t want to cut corners in the kitchen.
In another creative twist, the couple found a way to build stairs into the home which also worked as storage!
While the space also lets people hang jackets, keep coats and have shoes handy, having a staircase also means there’s no need to use a ladder to go up a level! As an added bonus, what’s currently serving as a coatrack is also plumbed and can accommodate a washer and dryer.
The master loft is a comfortable area with bed loungers, built-in lights and a cozy bed on the floor. On the other side is a dresser which makes the entire space function like a normal bedroom.
Finally, the other side of the home also has another loft with a ladder.
Up top is what serves as a “lounge” area, entertainment area and guest bedroom. Up there is television, a guitar and of course more windows.
The home even has its own little propane stove as well!
Finally, under the loft is a cozy bathroom hidden away behind a curtain which comes complete with a self-composting toilet.
