No one wants to spend hours scrubbing surfaces from top to bottom or bring out money for the latest cleaning products on the market. Good thing is we no longer have to either.
Why? There are cleaning hacks that make things faster all while using stuff from around the house.
Lemons and limes can remove rust without causing damage
There are ways to make our homes look fresher and cleaner without trying too hard. Look closely at your metal additions. Does it look a little off? Maybe they’ve built up rust, and you want to get them back to shining as new as the day they were installed?
No need to spend a fortune on new things or cleaning mixtures. What you need is a lemon or lime to add some shine.
Just cut the fruit in half and dip the open side in table salt. Rub it over the metal and wash away with water to remove the rust without being too abrasive.
Adhesive rollers protect lampshades while giving them a clean
Adhesive rollers. Lint rollers. They may be your new best friend when it comes to cleaning the home. They’re a great way to remove unwanted hair or flicks of dust from clothes, but why stop there?
It’s time to break them out to clean up the rest of those homes.
Not everyone has time to clean lampshades. However, skipping could be enough to add unwanted dust and bring cleanliness down a few notches.
Grabbing an adhesive roller will have you picking up all the dust in a few swipes of the brush without the worry of damaging those shades.
Use a coffee filter to get a streak-free finish on your screens
It sucks trying to watch something on a streaky screen. Working at home, letting the kids use our screens, or simply having them around can be enough to see dirt and fingerprints build up.
This can be annoying when we’re trying to work or binge-watch the latest show. It can even be exacerbated when cleaning streaks and make things worse by smudging them all over the screen.
There are many products on the market that claim to get rid of the mess, but you may not have to spend a penny.
Just grab a coffee filter, spray some cleaner onto the back, and wipe away any marks.
Chrome faucets can shine like new with a little bit of baby oil
There are certain items most of us have around the home. Baby oil might be one on the list since people like to add a bit of moisture to their skin, even if they don’t have a child.
Perhaps when applying baby oil in the bathroom, you’ve noticed that things don’t shine as brightly as they once did?
Use a bit of that oil to get things back on track. Pour some onto something like a cotton pad then wipe it all over your chrome faucets.
Do this for a few minutes to buff away any grease and grime, and it shouldn’t be long before they look brand new.
Granite countertops can be given a new lease of life with a homemade mixture
Granite countertops are popular in homes. But when family life gets in the way, and they’re looking a little dull, what do we do?
It’s tough to get them to shine without leaving that strange feeling on the counters from those cleaning products.
Time to make your own cleaning mixture.
What you need is one-quarter of a cup of surgical spirit, two cups of water, and six drops of dish soap. Mix in a bowl or spray bottle if you want to make more for later and then apply it to the granite tops.
Buff it off with a paper towel, and those counters should be clean, streak-free, and disinfected.
Clean your cabinet knobs
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by things that need cleaning all the time. Thankfully, not everything has to be deep cleaned when we organize the house.
But do start thinking about cleaning those cabinet knobs every so often to ensure they never get too dirty.
Just grab some soap and an old toothbrush to keep things looking clean. Dip the toothbrush in the soap and scrub to remove layers of grease and grime that have remained hidden all this time.
Once done, use a cloth or old shirt to buff away remaining soap, and you will be left with shining handles once more.
Household products are great for removing rust rings
The issue with rust rings is that people don’t realize they’re a problem until it’s too late. Even metal cans in the bathroom can be enough to cause a lot of damage if not spotted straight away.
At least, that was once the case.
Rust marks are tough to remove, so what if there is a simple way to get rid of them? Cream of tartar and lemon juice is all you need.
If those rust rings need a little extra help to budge, grab an old toothbrush to work the mixture into the rust before wiping it clean.
An extra step when cleaning glass shower doors could finally get them sparkling
Glass shower doors look sophisticated and elegant, but are a real pain to keep clean. Most of us have glass cleaner, while some even have a squeegee to try and keep things clean.
The truth is, it can feel almost impossible to get them as spotless as the day they were installed.
But there is one more addition to get things shining again. That’s a toothbrush and stiff-bristled brush that can be used to scrub the cleaner into the glass instead.
The toothbrush is perfect for getting into those hard-to-reach places, while the bigger brush will have the cleaner doing its job on the rest of the door.
People forget to keep their ovens clean
There are certain things we remember to clean every time we organize the house. However, there are some that’s easy to forget.
The oven might be one of them, but we cook our food in there, so it’s best to keep it as spotless as possible, right?
If you’ve neglected to give your oven some love and are now fighting baked-on food, don’t worry.
Just mix one cup of baking soda with a little dish soap. Combine them with a splash of water until you have what resembles the consistency of pancake batter.
Smear this over your oven, leave it for 15 to 20 minutes, and wipe away to reveal a shiny oven.
Cleaning the top of the stove can be easy when you know how
If you’ve put off cleaning the inside of your oven, there’s a big chance that the tops also need cleaning. They are known for hiding burned-on food that can be tough to remove after some time.
If you have hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, then that may no longer be an issue.
Mix the two with a bit of water until you have a thick paste. Smear across the entire stovetop as it gets to work removing any built-up grease, dirt, and spilled food.
Give it a few minutes to work before using a clean cloth or sponge to wipe away any mess, and you’re done.
Spot-clean the oven door with just a few items
Cleaning the oven isn’t something we do every day, but not cleaning it can hold us back in lots of ways.
The oven door can become messy with all those spills along the way, or it might fog, meaning you can’t see how food is getting along when it’s in there.
Just sprinkle the glass with some baking soda. Then, soak an old shirt or cloth in soapy water and lay it over the top of the baking soda for extra cleaning power.
Leave it for around 15 minutes before wiping clean in circular motions.
Stove burners can get messy if we don’t clean them after every use
Oftentimes we just want to eat dinner and relax, not spend hours cleaning the kitchen to make sure every inch of the room is spotless.
But leaving food on the burners and using it again or having a pan over boil is more than enough to see them get stuck on with no way to get it off.
But you don’t need to spend hours scrubbing the stove burners to get them clean again. A thick paste made from dish soap and baking soda is all it takes to break down dirt and grime.
Apply the mixture over any burned food and leave it for 20 minutes. There’s no need to scrub so just wipe away!
Mineral oil is great for removing grease from kitchens
Whether you love cooking or you prefer to reheat something on the stove and forget about the kitchen, there’s a good chance you still had to deal with greasy ovens and countertops.
Even some splatter while cooking can turn the counters into a mess.
Thankfully, mineral oil and a paper towel can leave your kitchen cleaner than ever. Add a few drops of the oil to a cloth or paper towel and wipe over any grease.
Not only does it break down the grease, it also stops it from building up again so quickly.
A simple lemon trick can remove built-up grime inside microwaves
We all use microwaves most days of the week. However, letting something splatter away inside can be enough to turn it into a messy hell.
The best way is to remove any spills as soon as they happen, but not all of us have the time to wipe the microwave after every use. Thankfully, you only need some lemon juice and a microwave-safe bowl to remove it.
Fill the bowl with some lemon juice and water then heat it in the microwave until it boils. This could take a few minutes so be warned.
Not only will it smell fresh, but the juice will loosen up any grease and food that’s stuck, making it easier to clean.
Your bathtub might benefit from an overnight cleaning routine
Cleaning bathtubs is something most of us try to do weekly, but we may not be doing what we need to keep it sparkling.Who knew that we were cleaning our bathtubs wrong all these years?
There is an overnight soak that may get it back to the shiny tub that so many of us long for.
What you need is a full bath and oxygen bleach. Add a large scoop of bleach and leave it all night to do its thing. Just keep the room well ventilated and shut from pets or the kids.
The next morning, let the water out and rinse the tub with water for that sparkly shine.
Cleaning the air conditioning vent should keep the house healthier
It seems that cleaning the air conditioning vent is something most people overlook. That doesn’t mean we should ignore it – but it doesn’t have to be hard either.
What you need are a few objects from around the house to keep it clean.
Soak a cloth in a cleaning solution and wring it out until it’s only just damp. Place the cloth around something long like a solid stick or blunt knife. You can poke through the vents to get all the dust, while the damp cloth should catch it all.
The best part is less dust should help keep the air healthier around your home.
Bleach can be used to remove stains from plastic cutting boards
Lots of people invest in plastic cutting boards instead of wooden ones for many reasons. Both have their benefits, but plastic ones usually develop more stains that can be pretty annoying.
Some gave up hope in ever getting them off. But not all hope has been lost, as there is a simple hack to scrub them clean.
Spray the stain with a mixture of water and bleach in a well-ventilated area. Let it soak for a couple of hours before cleaning the board and allowing it to air dry completely.
Do not try this on wooden boards, as the bleach could damage the cutting board.
Damp clothes and tongs are excellent for combating dusty blinds
The smallest details in a room make them look cleaner than ever before. If you look closely at your blinds, you will notice they’re not as clean as everything else out there.
Sure there are tools we can buy to make cleaning them simple, but not everyone has the space or budget for those.
However, with a pair of tongs and two cloths, you won’t need them at all. Soak the cloths in a cleaning solution then wring them out until they’re just damp.
Secure one onto each side of the tongs with rubber bands, and now you have the perfect blind cleaner. Run them along each blind to keep them clean.
The carpet doesn’t need to be replaced every time you leave a mark
A stain on the carpet can ruin the day for many of us. After all, it is tough to cover a stain if it’s in the middle of the room.
Thankfully, there’s no need to worry about finding something to put over it or how we’ll pay to replace the carpet. Soap and hydrogen peroxide can lift the stain straight out.
Mix both ingredients with some water in a spray bottle then cover the entire stain with the mixture. Once it’s worked into the carpet, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to rub it in, starting at the edges and moving inward.
Finish by blotting away excess moisture with paper towels.
Onions could be a great stand-in for window cleaners
This is a time when people want to use natural cleaners instead of stuff filled with chemicals. Perhaps you want to clean those windows, but you don’t have any cleaning products for the job.
Head to the pantry and grab a spare onion instead of driving to the store.
Cut the onion in half and use the open end to rub all over the windows. Not only will this remove the dirt and built-up grime, it also leaves a streak-free finish that can be tough to achieve.
Be sure to dispose of the onion before it accidentally ends up in your food.
Flour can stand in as a deep cleaner for steel sinks
If you have a steel sink, you may have noticed some brown spots appearing every so often.
Some think they need a strong cleaner or harsh chemicals to get their sink shiny again, but there’s something in the pantry that could do the trick just as well, if not even better.
We’re talking about flour.
Just clean your sink as you usually would. Then grab a cup or so of flour and cover the entire sink with the stuff. Leave it for a few minutes to work before wiping away with a towel or soft cloth.
This should remove all those tough stains and leave that steel sink looking polished.
A clean iron could result in cleaner laundry
One of the many things we put off each week is doing the ironing. Sadly, it’s something we can’t avoid forever.
But there’s a good chance that you’ve noticed the iron has picked up lots of dirt and burned on mess that just won’t come off. It is tempting to scrub it off with a metal brush, but that could damage the iron beyond repair.
Go for vinegar or baking soda to get it clean again. Dip a paper towel or cloth into the mixture and wipe over the metal plate to remove any residue.
Just be gentle and avoid the steam holes to prolong the life of your iron.
Time to start cleaning your garbage disposal regularly
You’ve been in your kitchen, and you can’t figure out the source of that smell, up until you’ve located the problem, but now you don’t know how to clean your garbage disposal.
This has happened to lots of people, and it’s not such a tough job. Grease and grime often builds up around the top, resulting in a nasty smell over time.
Take a toothbrush and some dish soap, and with the garbage disposal off, scrub all around the top of your splash guard. Once you’re done, run some hot water through to clear it all away.
Repeat this regularly to avoid too much build-up and keep your kitchen smelling fresh.
Eggshells are the waste-free solution for cleaning vases
There is nothing like having fresh flowers around the house. They look pretty, but vases can suffer as a result. Being so tall and thin means they can be difficult to clean.
Plus, the buildup of dirt can lead to discoloration in the glass.
Vases are have hard-to-reach spots. So take some broken eggshells the next time you need to clean yours.
Put them in the vase with some dish soap and water before swirling them in every direction. Not only will they get all the dirt, but eggshells are also a waste-free solution to keep your beloved things clean.
Cleaning your washing machine can keep the kitchen clean
We use our washing machines to keep our clothes nice and clean. But it is tough for it to do its job if it’s filled with dirt and grease that’s built up over time.
Washing machines are prone to limescale, making them less hygienic to use and that can cause a smell if left too long.
But there is a simple way to keep them clean. Grab some citric acid, vinegar, or bleach.
Add a cup of your chosen liquid to an empty washing machine and run it on the hottest cycle. That cleans the drum without any scrubbing and keeps things nicely disinfected for your next load of laundry.
Baking soda is great for disinfecting lots of furniture
Baking soda is found in most pantries. It’s a great addition to our cleaning routine, since we don’t need to buy extra cleaning products to keep things clean.
Our furniture goes through a lot and will sometimes need a little freshening up.
We’re talking couches, mattresses, and just about any other soft furnishings. Cover the fabric in baking soda and leave it for at least 30 minutes.
Use a stiff brush to work the powder in before vacuuming it away. This should not only bring up any old dirt and stains but also leave things nice and disinfected.
Microfiber furniture needs a special cleaning routine compared to other fabrics
If you have microfiber furniture, there’s a good chance you’ve invested in a separate cleaning routine from the rest of the fabric in your house.
A cloth won’t do, meaning you need surgical spirit and a stiff brush. Pour surgical spirit into a spray bottle then spray all over the dirty microfiber furniture.
Use a clean, white sponge – not a colored one in case of color transfer – to wipe over the area and remove dirt that’s lifted. Finish it off by using a stiff brush before letting the area air dry.
It won’t long before your microfiber furniture is back to its former glory.
Coffee stains on mugs are no longer a problem with lemon peel
Hands up if you can’t start the day without coffee. We need it to get our bodies working, but is something that can leave cups stained as a result.
Leaving our cups for a few hours is enough to create plenty of stains that seem almost impossible to remove. That’s where we could be wrong.
The next time you use a lemon, keep the peel. That’s because, combined with a little salt, it can create the perfect cup cleanser to remove those stains and get things shining again.
This is great for those with white mugs who want to keep them as clean as possible.
Soaking burned-on food might be a thing of the past
Even if you’re the best cook in the world, there’s a good chance food will get burned in a pan along the way.
We are used to leaving things soaking overnight or going mad with a metal brush to get it off, but the latter can remove any non-stick covering the pan.
Thankfully, there is an easier way.
Just take enough vinegar to cover the burned food and boil it for a few minutes in the pan. This breaks down most, if not all, of the food.
If you still need to get the final bits off, take baking soda and rub it over the cool pan. Once you’re done, just wash your pan like usual.
Bleach is a wonder product for removing built-up mold
It doesn’t matter how often you clean your bathtub, it can be hard to remove all of that mold if you don’t have the right products. But that bleach that most of us have could be all we need.
Grab some rubber gloves and soak cotton balls in a bowl of bleach.
Put them along the edge of the bath and wherever else mold is growing in your bathroom. Leave them for a few minutes and let the bleach break down and remove any mold spores.
Wipe away with a clean cloth to leave your bathtub smelling fresh and looking better than ever before.
