Although over-sized garments are trendy, classy and elegant will always be in style. Follow this tutorial to turn a men’s extra large shirt into a little girl’s dress that looks like it costs a fortune. What’s great about this project is that most of the parts are already sewn for you in the button up shirt. Rather than starting from scratch, you will just need to deconstruct the shirt and reconstruct the dress. That makes this an easy and excellent project for beginners. It also requires minimal supplies that you will probably already have at home, so keep reading to find out how to make this lovely dress!
What you will need
-an over-sized shirt
-matching thread
-a needle or sewing machine
-scissors
Making the dress
Begin by laying down the shirt flat and cut the patterns shown in the image above.
Next, turn the top body piece inside out and sew the sides together.
Then base stitch 1/2″ to the edge along the pink line and grab the top thread and pull to gather the skirt. Sew the skirt onto the body piece.
Cut out the sleeves smaller to fit accordingly. Sew along the pink line and discard the bottom piece.
Finally, attach the sleeves to the body piece and serge the unfinished seams.
Your daughter, niece, sister, or whoever, will love this dress especially knowing it was homemade!
