Let’s be honest, the holidays, while fun, can also be a bit overwhelming at times. There’s so much to do with not a lot of time. Even the most productive and organized people can fall behind on their seasonal to-do lists if they’re not careful. That’s why this tutorial on how to make your own gift bag is going to be a golden hack for streamlining your holiday tasks.

If you’ve ever found yourself standing in the gift wrapping aisle of a store, looking more like a deer in the headlights than an actual human, then this is the hack for you. No more worrying if you need to get shirt boxes, or how many gift bags and what color tissue paper you need. There’s no need to worry about all of those oddly shaped presents anymore either. With this hack, all you need are your usual rolls of wrapping paper. This tutorial is fast, easy and will leave you with some beautifully wrapped gifts.

For this tutorial, you are going to need:

  • Wrapping paper
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Scotch tape
  • Single hole punch

First, you’re going to cut a sheet of wrapping paper about twice the size of the width you’ll want the final product to be (the item you’re wrapping should be able to be covered by the amount that you’re using). Then, fold the left and right sides in towards the middle letting them overlap just a little bit. Tape the seam.

Next, fold the bottom of the wrapping paper up to create the bottom of the bag. Once you’ve done that, separate the two pieces of the bottom and flatten out the corners to create a diamond-like shape.

(Note: it’s fine if your flattened shape isn’t a perfect diamond. You’ll yield the same result if the top and bottom are straight rather than pointed.)

Fold the top and bottom of the flattened diamond towards the middle. Tape them in place.

After that, you are ready to place your gift in the bag. If you are looking for extra stability, place a piece of cardboard at the bottom of the bag.

Once the gift is in the bag, fold the top of the bag down towards the back. Then, punch two holes into the fold. Fasten your new gift bag close with matching ribbon by threading it through the holes and tying it in a bow.
