Fall is a great season, but it can also be a really tough season for your garden. Summer and spring are easy – you just toss some bright, sun or rain-loving flowers in your garden and bam! You’ve got yourself the perfect summery or springtime garden. In autumn however, things seem a little trickier than that because you have to factor in the weather and also, getting that “fall look” just right. Somehow bright pink perennials don’t come to mind.

If you’re struggling with how to get the perfect fall planter, you’re not alone. That’s why we’ve found you the two easiest and essential fall planter for this season’s gardening needs. Thanks to this amazing video on YouTube, you’re all set with all the fall DIY inspiration you need.

Let’s break it down!

The First Container

If you have a medium-size container that you need to fill, we’ve got you covered. Make sure you prep your planter like you normally would – thin layer of rocks at the bottom, followed by some premium planting soil. You’ll want to double check that your container has holes for drainage as water evaporates less during this time of the year, resulting in your plants possibly getting too much water.

Just like the video, you’ll want to find some plants that have both diverse looks and will be resistant to the shift in weather. Confirm with your local gardening center that you’re using zone 3 to 4 perennials to tough out any possible cold spells.

With all one-sided planters, try to place your tallest plants in the back and descend in height as you come to the front of your container. This will give your container a cascading look while making all of your beautiful plants visible.

Also, you’ll want to include a pop of color to make your planter really stand out. For this fall container, get some hardy flowers with warmer reds or yellows to make your arrangement pop.

Here’s a complete list to get this exact planter on your porch:

  • Rosemary
  • Sedum
  • ‘Hudson Bay’ Hosta
  • Frostfire Calibrachoa
  • Fireburst Bidens

The Second Container

For larger containers, find plants like the tall grass to balance out the height. Typically, you’ll want to find a plant that is equally as tall as your container in order to make it look right. Again, your tallest plant tends to go in the center back of your container, but in this case, the grass is placed slightly off-center to frame the walkway.

Don’t be afraid to get creative and think outside the box when designing your garden!

Next, after you place in most of your plants from tallest to shortest, you’ll need to find a cascading or draping plant. This will also help off-set the height between your plants and container without making them look too separated.

If you’re trying to match two containers without using all of the same plants, try having just one plant as an element to tie both containers together. For these two, both use the ‘Hosta’ plant for their common element.

Here’s the complete list for this container:

  • Ruby Ribbons Panicum
  • Red Globe Amaranth
  • Goldilocks Bidens
  • Bowles Cunningham Vinca
  • ‘Hudson Bay’ Hosta
