IQ Container Homes is located on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. The owner, Brenda Kelly, doesn’t only sell these unique container homes, she also lives in one.

Kelly first started living in a single 20-foot shipping container, but she has since added another 40-foot container, creating 484-square-feet of living space. Kelly has lived in her untraditional home for just over a year and a half, and she’s been loving every aspect of it.

Even though she expanded her space with the second container, 484-square-feet is much smaller than most people would be comfortable with. Kelly has maneuvered her way around this “tiny space dilemma” by having multi-functional furniture and keeping clutter to a minimum.

Walking through the front door, you enter the 40-foot container that houses the main living area, kitchen, master bedroom, and bathroom.

Underneath the lounge is extra storage space. The lounge also pulls out to double as an extra bed.

To maximize space, the kitchen has a small refrigerator with freezer and a small burner stove.

Counter space provides a place to socialize and dine. Cabinets and a built-in wine rack provide plenty of kitchen storage.

The master bedroom is located at the end of the 40-foot container. The bed features hidden storage underneath.

The bathroom contains a flush toilet, shower, and washing machine. Water comes from a rain collection tank, although drinking water comes from the city utilities.

The smaller 20-foot container is now the office and guest room.

The computer desk transforms into a single bed, and there is also a murphy bed at the other end of the room behind a sofa.

Kelly’s large back deck is one of the main features of her container home.

If Kelly has more energy than she needs, she can sell it back to the city. If she needs extra, she is fully connected to the city and can draw electricity from utilities if necessary.

Kelly walks you through her one-of-a-kind home in the video below. It goes to show that a tiny home doesn’t have to mean big compromises.
