It’s important to have proper plugs for your sinks to prevent clogs. But when you do get a clog, you don’t always have to call a plumber. There are plenty of ways to unclog a drain on your own.
If you don’t want to use harsh chemicals like, Draino or Liquid Plumber, you can try the following to get the job done.
Here are our favorite DIY home remedies for unclogging a drain.
Bellos Plunger
This mini plunger packs a punch. Use it in your sink to dislodge a clog.
Boiling Water
Slowly pour a pot of boiling water down your drain in two or three intervals leaving a few seconds in between each pour. The hot water should melt away any grease and wash down gunk that’s clogging your drain.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
First, dump a pot of boiling water down your drain. Then pour in about 1/2 cup of baking soda and let it stand for a few minutes. Next, you’ll want to pour in about 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of hot water.
Put your drain plug in place and let the mixture work its magic fo 5 to 10 minutes before you flush it through with another pot of boiling water. The effervescence from the baking soda and vinegar will loosen up the gunk at the bottom of the drain. The hot water will rinse the gunk away.
Wire Hanger
Straighten out a wire coat hanger and make a hook shape on one end of it. Push your hanger down the drain and move it up and down. You can pull out hair and other nasty stuff that might be clogging your drain. Just be careful not to push any of that stuff down further.
After you’re done getting as much stuff out as you can, pour some hot water down the drain.
Dish Soap
Pour 1/4 cup of dish detergent down your drain and let it sit for a few minutes before pouring boiling water down. Next, use a toilet plunger to loosen the junk in your drain. The dish soap will break up the grease in your drain and the plunger will loosen it.
Wet Vacuum
Create a seal over your drain and use your wet vacuum on the high setting to suck out what’s clogging your drain.
Disassemble Your Pipe
Place a bucket underneath your sink where the U-shaped pipe is. This is known as the trap. Take a plumbers wrench and loosen the slip nuts on your pipe. Remove the trap and be prepared for water to spill out into your bucket.
Then, clean out the trap pipe. An old toothbrush words well for this. Then put your pipes back together again.
Salt and Baking Soda
Pour a 1/2 cup of salt and a 1/2 cup of baking soda down your drain and let it sit there for 10 to 20 minutes. Next, flush a pot of boiling water down the drain. The salt/baking soda combo should dissolve the gunk in your drain.
