Hot water is something most people expect when they rent a vacation home, but what they don’t expect is for that hot water to be heated by geothermal energy. Or how about floors that are heated by geothermal water that runs through pipes underneath?
This unique Icelandic property was built to reflect the gorgeous surrounding landscape while being extremely eco-conscious and sustainable.
Sitting on an old lava field, this stunning house is truly one-of-a-kind. Located just 10 minutes away is Geysir, the very first geyser ever recorded in print, and the first known geyser to modern Europeans.
The entryway to the home is large and inviting. The perfect way to greet incoming guests.
There are tall closets immediately upon entry to store shoes, jackets, or anything else that needs to be stowed away. From this angle, you get a glimpse into the living room with its pyramid-shaped ceilings.
The great room features a cozy seating area with wrap-around sofa and a small dining table.
The triangular windows offer views out to the wild Icelandic countryside. With no neighbors in site, the home offers plenty of privacy. Don’t worry about the home getting chilly in the winter months; the geothermal heat radiates from underneath the wood flooring to keep the house warm.
Next to the seating area, you’ll find the fully-functional kitchen.
The architects and designers of the home went for a simple and minimalistic approach, letting the architecture speak for itself. The kitchen features a dishwasher, stove, oven, and high-end espresso maker. Drink a glass of the cold water that flows from the tap – it’s sourced from a nearby natural cold water spring. Although simple, the kitchen is certainly not lacking in luxury or amenities.
Downstairs, you’ll find two bedrooms, each boasting a queen-sized bed and a built-in desk.
In each bedroom, there is also a large closet with drawers, as well as a couple of small shelves for knick-knacks. Both rooms have an angled window looking out to the lava fields and moss-covered trees.
Also downstairs is the modern and spacious bathroom.
Since Iceland is an epicenter for geothermic activity, the entire home is heated via a geothermal energy power station nearby. Warm floors and a hot shower all thanks to Mother Nature.
The unique staircase features alternating extended wood steps that lead up to a small sleeping loft.
Although the space upstairs is tiny, it’s perfect for a children’s bedroom. The owners of the home say that there is also enough space for a queen-sized air mattress if you need more room for additional guests.
Although it’s tempting to spend all your time inside this incredible home, guests can also take advantage of the large outdoor deck and geothermally-heated hot tub.
With hardly any light pollution, stargazing at this charming home in Iceland is top-notch.
