With the cold weather around, I am sure many of us have gone to the local drug store for over-the-counter solutions to common illnesses such as the flu or the cold.
One such medication that is commonly used is Vicks VapoRub. It’s incredibly soothing. You apply it to your chest to relieve a stubborn cough or cold that won’t go away.
But it turns out that there are other uses for Vicks VapoRub that aren’t advertised on the jar itself.
Soothe Muscles That Ache
If you happen to workout and exert a lot of energy one day, it might be painful to wake up the following day. Your muscles will be sore, and they may ache. If they do, rub a layer of VapoRub on the area using a warm towel. Not only will this relieve the pain, but it will help the muscles recover faster.
Keep Pets In Place
While we love having pets in our house, there are certain areas that are simply “off limits.” We don’t want pets to ruffle through our home office and destroy important documents or break anything that’s fragile. Rather than closing doors all the time, try VapoRub instead. Leave an open jar or two in rooms that you need your pets to stay clear of. The strong smell will warn them to stay away.
Neosporin Replacement
If you run out of Neosporin, use VapoRub as a replacement. Spread a thin layer around the wounded area (splinters, cuts, etc.) to help accelerate the healing process. It also helps protect against germs and bacteria.
Stop Headaches
Headaches can hit you without warning. Whether it be because of loud noises, an uncomfortable public transportation ride, electronic use, or even pregnancy, you can use VapoRub to alleviate the pain. Rub a bit under your nose and breathe deeply. The menthol in the rub will help you clear up your headache.
Fix Dry, Cracked Heels
Heels and hands are prone to dryness, and this is amplified in the winter. If skin goes too long without moisture, you could end up with the skin cracking, which is very painful to deal with.
To combat this, hydrate your skin with VapoRub a few times a day, and layer with socks or bandages until the cracks have healed.
Heal Bruises
Bruises are painful to deal with as well. Mix a pinch of salt with VapoRub, and apply it to the bruised area. This will help break up the bruise, and it will heal more quickly.
Bug Repellent
Apply a thin layer of VapoRub to exposed skin, and it will repel annoying insects like mosquitoes. This is perfect for camping or when traveling through humid areas.
Fight against stretch marks
Stretch marks are one of the worst symptoms of aging. And for those experiencing pregnancy, finding ways to keep your skin looking young is crucial. It turns out though, that Vicks VapoRub is a great way to fight against stretch marks from developing. Some of the primary ingredients in Vicks, eucalyptus oil, cedar leaf oil, petrolatum, camphor, and turpentine oil, all combine to help stretched skin both feel softer and increase moisture. This will help to keep stretch marks from standing out.
Prevent cracked heels
Do you wish you had soft heals but are stick with skin that dries and cracks? Just grab some Vicks and apply it to your heels and feet. Wear cotton socks on top and be sure to wash your feet with warm water. Use the Vicks nightly and you can also rub a pumice stone onto your heels to help exfoliate and further soften your skin.
Relieve headaches and migraines
If you ever have headaches or migraines often, Vicks can be a great way to help provide some relief to the pain. The menthol in Vicks VapoRub helps to cool off your temples and relieve pressure if you rub some onto it. Be sure to keep it around, but if your migraines are occurring frequently, it would be a good idea to see a doctor.
Stop Earaches
Use Vicks VapoRub to stop earaches. Rub a small amount of VapoRub on a cotton ball and put it in your ear for several hours, several times a day. It will not only reduce the pain but also prevent a potential infection.
