The sponge is a versatile item if you know how to use it right. It typically goes to use in our kitchens and bathrooms but there actually are tons of ways you can use them if you use your imagination. Here are 15 unconventional ways you could use an extra sponge around the house!
Sponge Painting
Kids especially love painting with sponges. Sponges are especially great for finger painting, but they can also be handy tools for serious artwork as well!
Removing Old Wallpaper
Getting rid of your wallpaper can be a pain. Luckily, using a sponge the right way can make the process much easier. All you have to do is have the sponge absorb hot water as well as fabric softener. Then take the sponge and rub it over your wallpaper. The dried paste will loosen and it will be much easier for you to replace it.
A Makeshift Icepack
A sponge can make a great icepack if you don’t have one lying around. All you have to do is have the sponge absorb some water, place it in a ziploc bag (be sure to get all the air out), and then freeze the sponge.
Avoid Wood and Surface Scratches
Getting scratches out of hardwood floors of table surfaces are a pain and cna even be expensive. That’s why it’s best to avoid the problem. Just cut up a sponge into smaller, thin squares and attach them to the bottom of objects around the house!
Pad the Grip to a Handle
Yard work can take a huge toll on your hands. That’s why it helps to soften the grip of handles you use on a regular basis. Cut out a thin rectangle from your sponge and place it around the handle of your rake or shovel. You can even use it on spare gym equipment!
Make Soap Last Longer
I’m always surprised by how quickly my bath soap can disappear. But you can make it last for much longer with almost no effort, just grab a clean sponge and place your soap on top of it after you’re finished using it.
Apply Nail Polish
If you’ve got the right type of sponge, it can be great for when you’re doing your nails. You can use it to test out your nail polish colors, to wipe your nails clean, or apply nail polish. You can even cut a sponge into little squares to place between your toes for that spa feel!
Repel Mosquitos
All you have to do is soak a sponge in mosquito repellent and wipe down your patio furniture!
Remove Car Scratches
Sponges always seem to be a good choice for getting rid of little scratches on your car. All you’ve got to do is dab your sponge with some toothpaste, or your scratch removal formula of choice, then rub it against the scratched surface.
Pin Cushion
There never seems to be a pin cushion around when you need one. Luckily, using a sponge can save you some time without any hassle!
Keep Vegetables Crunchy
Place a sponge in your refrigerate compartment or area for where you keep your vegetables. The sponge will soak up excess moisture and keep your food crunchy.
Protect Fragile Items in a Box
You know the bubble wrap that everybody loves to pop? Let’s say you don’t have any but you need to mail a fragile item. Just grab some sponges and cushion any surfaces inside of a box.
Remove Refrigerator Odors
When you’re cleaning out your fridge, sprinkle some baking soda into a sponge. Then place your sponge inside your refrigerator overnight and it’ll be odor-free in the morning!
