Even if you use pillowcases, pillows will naturally grow yellow and dirty over time. They are used every single day, so it’s perfectly understandable. Sweat, face creams, hair sprays, and other products can all add up and contribute to the “yellow-ness” of your pillow. Rather than toss your pillows for new ones every so often, try this little trick to make them look new again. It’s simple and easy!
Blogger Jillee from One Good Thing recently shared a “Miracle Laundry Whitening Solution” that’s perfect for cleaning your pillows.
It’s important to check that your pillows can be washed in very hot water. Jillee recommends water that’s piping hot for the best results.
To start, you will need the following materials:
- 1 cup of laundry detergent
- 1 cup of powdered dishwasher detergent
- 1 cup of bleach
- 1/2 cup of Borax
Here is the step-by-step breakdown:
- Fill your laundry machine 1/3 full with water that is as hot as possible
- Add the magic solution (ingredients above mixed together) to the hot water. Turn on the wash cycle to agitate for a few minutes until the detergent is mixed.
- Add pillows. Jillee recommends you wash two at a time.
- Finish filling the machine with water and let washer run for a few more minutes
- Turn the pillows. Let machine run couple minutes on both sides
- Turn off washer and let pillows soak for several hours or overnight.
After the soak, do a full wash cycle and include a second rinse. Or, run the complete wash cycle twice. This will depend on your washing machine’s settings and capabilities. You can also add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle to completely remove any residue from the detergent used.
Once the second rise is done, you should notice drastic improvements.
Once done, dry the pillows on the lowest heat setting possible. You can also dry them outside under the sun.
To make your pillows fluffy again, dry them with tennis balls covered in white socks.
The end result is a white, fluffy pillow that looks brand new!
Here’s a before after picture to show you the difference.
