In the lush woods of Wales, a woman found her calling so she built her home there.
Her name is Emma. She lives without running water, electricity, the internet, or even a telephone. The cost of building her home was around £1000 ($1,300). She’s been living here for 2 decades.
She has no interest in the modern world with all its luxuries. Emma made the choice and she’s sticking to it.
Emma is no longer interested in working a job where she’ll only spend her salary and do it all over again. She found that living in isolation is what makes her happy.
Isolated with nature as her companion.
Emma does not have to worry about debt. There’s no rent to worry over, and no credit cards to stress about. She’s free from all those monthly cares.
She does own the land so the home is completely legal. Chickens and goats provide eggs and milk for her nutrition so food comes easy.
Emma cooks on an open fire and the stream outside the earthen home is her source of water. It is potable and clean so she doesn’t worry about diseases or the like.
The summers are perfect and easy to live in, but winters are a challenge for her. Emma chops wood, carries water, and will do whatever it takes to survive the brutal cold.
The construction took a lot of trial and error. Her roof is covered with greenery and it sits on walls made from straw bales. Emma made the plaster from horse manure and clay.
It’s cozy enough for the winter.
Emma’s roof is alive and blends well with the area. Strangers walking won’t even notice the home from afar.
Her home blends so beautifully with nature. She lives alone, and it is quiet and peaceful. Almost like Emma was meant to do this.
There are no curtains on her huge windows. That allows natural lighting from the sun and the moon to enter her home.
The ceiling is stunning if you look closely. Emma had each rafter sit on top of another.
A metaphor for equality according to her. That makes each piece of wood help carry the load.
There’s a fireplace inside so Emma can heat water for tea.
Emma doesn’t have any tables or counters. There’s no furniture either so she sits or squats on the floor. That’s how she prepares her meals.
Emma collects her water from a stream. There’s even a sauna, and a bath that can be heated with fire. A composting toilet is there for her basic needs and a river for when she wants to swim.
It’s certainly not a lifestyle anyone would just embrace. In fact it is a huge decision to make, seeing as it’s so easy living in the modern world.
But Emma made that decision and she’s very happy living away from the busy world.
