If you had $4,500 to spend on anything you wanted, what would you buy? New clothes, electronics, or perhaps a trip to some exotic island? Well, for one man, he went a different route. He used that amount of money to create a super cool home.
A different way of living
Today, an increasing number of people are choosing to live differently. For some, that means residing in a tiny house or cabin. For others, it entails converting old vehicles. That’s what one man did…with a used school bus.
How it all began
Aaron traded in his old vehicle for a bus. With a plan in mind, he got busy transforming both the inside and outside so he and his Australian Cattle dog named Chevy could travel throughout British Columbia. As a Ford bus, the previous owner had switched the “F” and “D” around, which Aaron left as “Dorf.”
Preparing for winter
To make sure he and Chevy were comfortable, he insulated the bus quite well. Aaron also added a solar power system, making it possible to have electricity when off-the-grid. Keeping with the buses’ era, he painted the outside a baby blue with cool striping.
An interior to die for
Although the outside isn’t much to write home about, the interior is a different story. Using as much reclaimed wood and other materials as possible, he went to work. His new home has all the comforts you’d want in a standard house, including a bed and kitchen.
There’s a lot more
Aaron focused on finding thrift items that either matched or complimented the style of the bus. Perhaps one of the most unique items is the countertop. For that, he used a teeter-totter found in a goat pen.
Super comfortable
Along with a working refrigerator and gas stove/oven, he has shelving. That way, he has a place for clothes and other items. He even keeps a variety of plants inside…a hobby he enjoys.
Highly efficient
He used repurposed wooden planks he found for the trim and an old discarded “exit” sign that he converted into a medicine cabinet. Basically, he grabbed items that other people tossed out as junk.
A simpler life
As Aaron explained, he spent about four months figuring out how to downsize. He wanted to have a simpler life, one that provided him with the freedom to travel. So, he came up with different ideas on how to accomplish that but without compromising on quality.
A work in progress
Although he’s already done a lot, Aaron has additional plans. One project involves putting in a toilet. And since he currently uses the inside of the oven as his pantry, he’s thinking about adding additional storage space.
Amazing organization
It’s not just the inside of the bus that’s organized but also the exterior. On the back, Aaron has a bike and kayak. There’s also room for propane and gas.
Aaron and Chevy are already having a blast. They get to see incredible places that others only dream about. And to chronicle his updates and adventures, he started an Instagram account. To get more details about this fantastic conversion, check out the video below.
