Most of us understand that the lifestyle of the Amish people is different from modern society. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t a part of our society. In contrast to our fast-paced world, Amish people live a simple life.
They prefer to wear simple clothes and use as few modern tools to not interrupt family time, nor replace face-to-face conversations whenever possible.
And it’s because of these that makes us curious about their daily life.
They don’t use electricity and they believe in having a large family because it’s a gift from God. Additionally, farm families tend to have larger families. According to the town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania tourism website:
“The family is the most important social unit among the PA Amish; those with seven to ten children are not uncommon. This high birth rate feeds the growth of the community of Amish in PA, as does the fact that four out of five children choose to become baptized and remain in the church. Jobs, friendships and business opportunities provide incentives to stay.”
Working hard is considered godly, but using technological advancements has been considered undesirable because they reduce the need for hard work.
The Amish are also very resourceful.
They are skilled craftsmen, specifically in woodworking. They create their own furniture and each of these are unique. Since they don’t have electricity, they use a generator to create their furniture. While their source of light may vary from every Amish home, most of them use gas lamps.
To get around their community they use horse buggies.
Now, this must be loads of fun. Instead of gas and fuel polluting the air, you can smell the fresh air and hear horse hooves. Amish people truly live a simple life away. Hence, when you are given the chance to learn about their home and community, you take it.
One woman on YouTube shared what it’s like living in an Amish community.
She happily shared with her viewers where and how the Amish store their food, dining area, kitchen, and bedroom. Based on her video, there isn’t much to see. But to anyone who was watching, her home shed light on their way of life.
The exterior of an Amish home is very simple. It doesn’t have any elaborate details and it’s painted in white.
Her front porch is adorned with wooden rocking chairs. All handmade of course. Then she takes us inside the house through a large basement kitchen.
The basement is the size of some people’s houses. It has a large sink, oven, dining tables, and chairs. But, the one that will attract you the most is the wall with several canned items.
The Amish people are known for growing their own vegetables, so each can is labeled with the product’s name.
Imagine not going to the groceries because you can grow all the ingredients in your land. Pretty cool, right? Moving on, the tour continues to a room with a large table and a quilt on top of it. This must be a place for crafting.
The video moves to Amish bedrooms.
Their bedrooms are just that – a room with a bed. They don’t have closets which avoid any clutter. Then the camera pans out to the property.
They have a huge property with acres of land. The houses are also big. This video definitely gives us some perspective on the Amish’s way of living.
