Shipping containers are often seen on the back of semi-trucks or cargo ships. Usually, they’re used to store and transport freight, but one Costa Rican company is turning them into homes.

Costa Rica’s Cúbica specializes in reconstructing shipping containers and turning them into magnificent homes and commercial buildings. Cúbica prides their buildings on being low-cost, low maintenance, and earthquake resistant.

One of Cúbica’s most impressive projects is Casa Cúbica. It is a 20-foot shipping container that has been incredibly transformed into a gorgeous home.

The unique home boasts just 160-square-feet of living space, although, there is a short extension at one end of the home. It has a full kitchenette, laundry facilities, and full bathroom. Let’s take a look.

The home completely seals up for security or transportation.

The roof and walls of the container home have an air space behind the metal siding and wood roofing. This helps keeps the sun from directly hitting the container.

Large sliding glass doors provide the entrance to the small, beautiful home. An expansive deck provides extra living space during warmer months.

Even though the home is small, the clean lines and attention to detail provide the luxury you’d find in a mansion.

The kitchen, although tiny, has all of the functionality you’d need. There is a two-burner stove, microwave, sink, and mini-fridge.

After cooking delicious meals, there is plenty of space for four to dine at the fold-down table.

Not only does the dining room table fold up and down, but behind it, is a hidden feature.

Using the same space as the dining table, the main wall of the home also features a Murphy bed.

Residents of Casa Cúbica don’t have to worry when they have guests over; there’s plenty of space.

An extension to the side of the kitchen provides room for two extra beds, each with their own window.

A small contemporary bathroom sits at the other end of the shipping container home.

Unseen in the picture is the toilet, washer, and dryer to the left, and a shower with a door that leads outside to the right.

Shipping container homes can often feel narrow and tight. Cúbica has done a magnificent job of designing a floorplan to prevent a claustrophobic feel.
