The bath bomb fad has got us. We’re not sure what’s more enjoyable, finding a jeweled surprise in the middle of your bath or watching it fizz out while turning your bathtub into a rainbow masterpiece.
What we do know is that spending around $8 a pop for this super satisfying experience can get pricey. Thanks to YouTube, we learned how to make a variety of our own bath bomb. Now, you can have a bit of luxury every time you take a bath. They also make great gifts for family and friends.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own DIY bath bombs:
Dry ingredients:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1/2 cup Epsom salt
Wet ingredients:
- 1 tsp. water
- 2 tsp. essential oil
- 3 tsp. vegetable oil (we like to use olive oil because it’s great for your skin)
- food or soap coloring (choose one color or a variety of colors)
Other things you’ll need:
- bowl
- whisk
- jar
- bath bomb mold
Step 1.) To start, whisk all of your dry ingredients together in a bowl. Then mix your liquid ingredients into a second bowl. You’ll need to repeat this process is separate bowls for every color you want to use, so you might want to think about halving your recipes.
Mixing your colors and essential oils really gives you the chance to have fun and personalize your bath bomb. Different oils like vanilla, lavender or peppermint, all have different benefits, like relieving stress or headaches. Here‘s a guide to essential oils.
Colors also have therapeutic properties, which you can find a chart of here.
So, if you want a bath bomb that will help you sleep, you can create a blue bath bomb scented with lavender, sage, ylang-ylang and vanilla.
Step 2.) Next, you’ll slowly add in your liquid mixture. You can use a spoon for this process or you can spray your wet ingredients into the dry mixtures with a spray bottle. Make sure your mixture is well blended. It should look and feel similar to wet sand.
Step 3.) Next, pack your ingredients into your mold while it is still moist. You can use a circular or fun shape, as long as the mold has two sides that can snap together. Make sure you really pack your mixture tight. You can add an excess amount so that both sides will stick together. This will get brushed aside.
Step. 4) Let your bath bomb dry for two days.
Step 5.) Pop your bomb out of the mold and enjoy!
The best thing about bath bombs is that you can make them a ton of different ways. Here’s how to make a few of our favorites:

Spoon in different colors into your mold to create a tie-dye effect. Make sure you overlap the colors so they are visible from the outside of the mold. Check out the tutorial here.

Black Bath Bomb
Create mesmerizing black bath bombs by adding 1 tablespoon of activated charcoal to your dry ingredients and black food coloring with your wet ingredients. You can check out the full tutorial here.
Surprise Bomb
Leave a prize (such as dried herbs or flowers, a little toy or a ring inside a little plastic container) inside your bath bomb by pressing it into the center of your bath bomb. Place the other side of the mold on top of it and close it firmly.
