Finding the right sized rug that is affordable and perfectly compliments your room isn’t always easy. But did you know that you can make your very own from any fabric you want? Nope, we’re not joking. You totally can, and we’ll show you how!

Nope, we’re not joking. You totally can, and we’ll show you how!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Decorator weight fabric
  • Rubber door mat
  • Scissors
  • Spray adhesive
  • Paint brush
  • Water-based polyurethane
  • Iron
  • Ironing board

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1.) First, cut your rubber mat to the shape and size that you’d like your rug to be. You can find rubber matting at most hardware stores sold by the foot.

Step 2.) Next, cut out your fabric so that it is 2 inches longer than your rubber mat on all sides.

Step 3.) Iron out your fabric to make sure it has no wrinkles. This is very important! You don’t want to end up with wrinkles in your rug.

Step 4.) Spray some spray adhesive on the smooth side of the rubber mat.

Step 5.) Place your mat so that the sticky side of it is facing the back of your fabric, then flip over your mat and smooth it out.

Step 6.) Spray some more adhesive on the edges of your fabric and on the back of your mat, then fold the fabric along the top and bottom of your mat. Press it into the underside of the rubber mat.

Step 7.) Next, turn the corners of your fabric and fold your fabric onto the mat.

8.) Let Your adhesive drive for about a half hour.

9.) Last, paint a layer of the water-based polyurethane onto your fabric and let it dry for two hours before adding the second coat. You’ll need a total of three to four coats.
