Built in 1923 for just $1,400, the Hansel House was originally built as a storefront for otsy-totsy dolls. Then in 1993, it was converted to an adorable residential home.

Located in Carmel, California, the charming cottage was built by Hugh Comstock for his wife’s doll business. Endearingly called the Doll House or the Hansel House, the home was designed to replicate the whimsical cottage of the witch in the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel.

Even the landscaping seems to flow along with the fairytale theme of the adorable abode.

The interior was converted to a living space in 1993 by Congleton Architect AIA. Now, the 290-sq-ft home can sleep up to five people.

The main living room features a fireplace with original hearth, and tall vaulted ceilings to help make the space feel large and open. Surprisingly, this cottage is not one-of-a-kind; once it was built, Comstock was hired to build 15 of them in total in the Carmel area.

Looking the opposite direction, you can see the main bedroom to the left, kitchen to the right, and small loft space in the center.

The small attic and loft space have been converted into a sleeping area for guests, and the ladder can be folded up when not in use.

The bathroom in the historic Hansel cottage was completely renovated and modernized. The new owners saved space by replacing the bathtub with a shower.

A small vanity with sink, along with a tiny medicine cabinet are really all you need in such a sweet, charming cottage.

The bathroom closet was knocked down to expand the bedroom to a grand 8′ x 9′ space.

The bedroom also features tall vaulted ceilings and built-in handmade cabinetry for storage. Large windows look out amongst the beautiful landscaping of the home.

In true fairy tale form, the serene gardens surround the entire cottage. The perfect setting for relaxing and enjoying a nice cup of coffee.

The owners of the home have placed multiple birdhouses throughout the property to just add to the adorable charm.

And if the Hansel cottage couldn’t get more lovable — the view is the icing on the cake.
