Got a popcorn ceiling? Do you despise it?

Most people do, and a lot of them are under the impression that they are just stuck with it and there’s nothing they can do about it. That’s not the case. You can remove a popcorn ceiling fairly easily.

It’s a little messy, but with these methods, it’s not as bad as you think. Once the popcorn is gone, you can give your ceiling a fresh coat of paint and enjoy the nice, untextured look of it. It can change the entire look of your home. If you are looking to remove your popcorn ceiling, try one of these techniques.

Scraper and Vacuum

Dreading sweeping the popcorn up and picking it off the carpets and furniture for weeks? When you attach your scraper to a vacuum, you can just suck it up as you go. This allows you to get the job done a lot faster and makes cleanup easier. Of course, all of it won’t make it into the vacuum, so you might still have to do some sweeping. Still, the majority of it will get sucked into the canister.

There are no expensive tools needed for this method. Just use electrical tape to tape the scraper to the end of your Shop-Vac or vacuum cleaner, and go. You can even use an extension to avoid having to use a ladder.

Cover It

If you hate the popcorn ceilings but don’t want to mess with scraping them, just cover them up with drywall. You can install the drywall over the popcorn and give your ceiling a flat look. Nobody will ever know that there is a popcorn ceiling hiding underneath. Other alternatives to drywall include ceiling tiles, planks, and paneling.

Spray with Water

Scraping the popcorn ceiling dry can make it go everywhere and take forever. Before you start scraping, use a spray bottle to make the popcorn wet. This will make scraping easier and help keep it from flying all over the place and sticking to your furniture and curtains.

It’s a good idea to make a little work basket with all the things you need so you can switch between them. A tool belt may also come in handy.

If you want to make cleanup as easy as possible, cover the entire area with plastic or drop cloths. The popcorn will fall on the drop cloths, and you can just pick them up and throw them away instead of sweeping and vacuuming for eternity.

Remove Everything

If you have room and time, take everything out of the room you are working in. This will prevent the popcorn from falling on and under things. When it comes time to clean it up, you can sweep or vacuum an empty room much easier than a room full of furniture and decorations.

Not everyone has a problem with popcorn ceilings. Some people actually like them. At one time, they were a decorative option that people asked for in homes. Others absolutely hate them and can’t stand the sight of them. If you are one of these people, stop stressing. You can remove the popcorn from your ceiling and create a nice, clean, modern-looking ceiling.
