Would you live in a house that’s surrounded by boulders?

This may sound unusual for many people, but there are actually some who embraced these big rocks around their houses.

Steve Demarest is one of them.

He bought a rocky property in the Cascade Mountains in Leavenworth, Washington. It includes a cave as well, where his kids used to play and enjoy themselves.

When his children “outgrew” it, Steve used it as an opportunity to transform it into a shelter where their whole family can spend time together.

He was inspired to execute this project, given how he loves working with rocks.

He persevered in constructing a house there despite the fact that the area is entirely surrounded by huge rocks. He has a deep appreciation for nature, thus, he wants to completely enjoy what it has to offer.

How did he do it?

He started to excavate the cave. It definitely took a lot of work and patience.

Additionally, he had to deal with the struggles of breaking, drilling, and cutting the rocks out.

Due to their size, certain boulders had to stay where they were.

Steve gave a tour of his sturdy home.

Thankfully, natural light and ventilation were not a problem in his house. He shared that he just had to add a shed roof to refrain the snow from piling up.

Originally, he planned to build a cabin inside the cave.

It ended up in a hot tub when he realized it was a bit little for a cabin.

Seeing how it turned out is pretty impressive, especially when he shared that all of the rocks covering it were set by hand.

Of course, like any other residence, this man’s abode also features a kitchen.

It also has an area where his family can spend time and have meals together. What’s amazing is it has a faucet, and the water that comes out of it comes from the well they dug.

Curious about the rooms?

They have an open loft area, and according to Steve, it was built minimalist.

Instead of getting a cabinet that would take up too much space, they opted to use a clothes rack.

When Steve was building the entire monolith home, he encountered some problems as well.

At first, he didn’t know how to build a roof that was ideal for it. That’s why he came up with having a spider web of steel I-beams.

He further explained how it was successfully installed.

You’ll see a lot of interesting things inside his house.

This includes their fireplace, which not only keeps them warm but also makes their home more appealing to the eye.

Check out its bathroom.

Like a usual bathroom that we see, it features a toilet and a shower. But brace yourself when you see its tiles.

Just like the hot tub, it has natural stone tiles, and Steve was also the one who arranged them.

This house was definitely constructed with creativity and passion.

Steve indeed succeeded in building it for his family even though his property is not the ideal location for some people.

For sure, the foundation of his home is as solid as the boulders that surround it.
