Would you believe it if someone told you an old double-decker bus could be transformed into a beautiful, comfortable, and fully functional country home? All it takes is the right skill set, vision, and determination to see your project through to the end, despite the obstacles that may arise in the process.
Sit back and relax as we take you on a tour of a double-decker bus converted into a 3-bedroom country home.
Meet ‘Bertie the Bus’ a country beauty sitting in the middle of a peaceful, quiet, green field in rural England
We are greeted by the lone, army grey colored double-decker bus situated in the middle of an open field, far from the noise of the road and urban hubbub. Everything looks as if it’s been designed to be in harmony with nature.
Outside the bus, we see a lot of open space for outdoor activities but it’s only a hint of what we’ll discover inside the bus itself.
As we step inside the bus, we’re immediately welcomed by a cozy kitchen and living room
Bertie, while converted into a fully functional home, was designed to retain a lot of the original bus features that give the place a very unique appearance. The kitchen area, while small, looks functional, as well as cozy, and has everything a modern kitchen should have.
We really love the rustic, natural look and the atmosphere it creates, reminiscent of pre World War 2 English interior design. We find the classic English toaster and kettle, sink and a grill, and plenty of storage space.
The details are all lovely and provide everything a small family needs.
Decent sized living space provides enough room for leisure while retaining the original bus look
We see that the original bus seats have been reupholstered to provide plenty of sitting space occupying the very back of the bus on the ground floor.
“This area is huge and the table is huge as well and it almost gives an illusion like this part of the bus is wider or bigger. You could probably get ten people sat around here all at once.”
Heading upstairs to the top deck, we’re fascinated by the details and the creativity with which the bus was converted into a livable home
As you go upstairs, you realize you’re walking up the original bus stairs, which is pretty exciting as it gives you an illusion that you’re really on a journey and inside a real, moving bus! Taller people will soon discover that it’s quite easy to bang your head on the ceiling if they’re not careful!
The top deck gets more heat than the lower deck but there are enough of the original windows around the edge to allow proper ventilation. Out of the three bedrooms located on the top deck, the main bedroom provides the most comfort.
When you walk into the main bedroom, you almost forget that you’re inside a double-decker bus
There’s just enough space in the main bedroom to feel comfortable and cozy without ever getting that claustrophobic feeling of being confined to small spaces. What we love the most about the main bedroom is that it’s really light and airy and gives a commanding view of the green fields around the bus.
Despite the limited space, each bedroom has a double bed and a lovely view
For storage, there’s enough room under the bed, supplemented by hooks with hangers and it pretty much satisfies all the storage needs. In the second bedroom, we also find a double bed but there’s less space and a little less light. Despite this, it makes you feel as if you’re inside a cabin and is perfect for people who feel adventurous!
The last bedroom is located at the front of the bus and even though it’s the smallest of the bedrooms, it has the best view of the fields, ideal for those who want to reconnect with nature.
So where’s the bathroom?
We saved the best for last! You’ll be surprised when you see where the bathroom is! We’ll let you guess and if you wondered why we haven’t mentioned the driver’s cab yet, that’s because it’s been converted into a bathroom!
It’s a bathroom unlike any other you’ve seen before, however, there’s only the toilet inside and it serves as the driver’s seat at the same time! A toilet with the steering wheel sounds like something straight out of a little boy’s dream doesn’t it?
Conclusion: Bertie is not just an old converted double-decker bus, but a perfect little country home on wheels
We’ve had a great time on our tour of Bertie the Bus and would definitively want to spend a day or two living there. It’s everything you’d want from a country home ideal for spending time far from the stress of urban living.
