From the moment we wake up until we go to bed, we enjoy the privilege of living lives in a technologically advanced society.

Are you craving Thai food but can’t cook? You can easily order through a delivery app and get restaurant-grade food at your convenience. No time to clean the house? There are vacuum robots that can be programmed to clean your house without supervision.

The Amish have successfully chosen to live away from modern conveniences for centuries.

The Amish lifestyle in North America has been around since the 18th century. They have settled in several states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas.

The Old Order Amish are known for their religious lifestyle which centers around community and simplicity. They are non-conformists and they reject the use of electricity and automobiles among other things. They make their living through farming and agriculture.

It makes one wonder how they actually live

Apart from sporadic representations in movies or books, the Amish lifestyle remains unreal to many. Some cannot believe that such a sub-culture can exist. However, the Amish are fascinating people who live unique lives.

We discover in the video that there are at least two houses atop the land. They are called the main house and the father’s house. We are not surprised that these homes are in such close proximity. The Amish are known for their strong family ties.

According to Amish America, their homes are built simply and practically. This seems certainly true when looking at these two!

They have space, space, and lots of space!

Amish homes are also designed to have large spaces and to be well-lit. They need to be suitable for gatherings. True to form, this kitchen is spacious. Notice that there are plenty of handmade cupboards. Aren’t they beautifully crafted?

This home has a shelving unit where they keep preserved food. As you can see, they have organized and labeled the shelves very well. Here, we can find that they have potatoes, vegetables, apple pie filling, bologna, and meatballs stocked. Talk about preparing for a rainy day!

Is this a quilting room?

Amish quilts are popular among collectors and tourists. They are meticulously made by hand. Quilting is usually made by women as a pastime.

We imagine this room to be this family’s quilting area. It looks quaint and relaxing. There must have been lots of lovely quilts coming from this room.

Their bedrooms are simple and functional

After a hard day’s work, we all need a good night’s sleep. This Amish home’s bedrooms are big and comfortable. They do not have closets. This declutters the room.

Normally, they only have a bed, a bedside table, and a lamp. Though the room in the picture has a wooden rocking chair. They have curtains draped on their windows for practical reasons.

Very few in today’s society are willing to give up technology and electricity any time soon.

However, you have to admit that seeing these pictures makes you realize that these people are actually quite amazing. Their lives are uniquely theirs. There must be a joy to being detached from modern life’s pace. The Amish really makes us understand the phrase “to each his own.”
