Waking up to views of the water is a dream for many people, and if you happen to be a lucky guest at The River Den — that dream can become a glorious reality.

Located in a bay on the Gatineau River in Wakefield, Quebec, The River Den is an adorable Airbnb rental made from five pontoon boats. It is 33-feet long, with 23 of those feet dedicated to living space. It features a rooftop deck and three 8-foot patio doors.

This charming river getaway is completely off-the-grid; there is no electricity, hot water, or a fridge. However, there are many amenities that are provided for heat and cooking. Plus, you can always take a dip in the river to rinse off.

Once aboard The River Den, you’ll enter the main floor and living space.

Take a nap in the chaise lounge near the large windows overlooking the Gatineau River, or grab a book and relax on the handcrafted bench in the seating area to the right. From this view, you can get a glimpse of the small kitchen and the dining area near the rear of the home.

Since there is no electricity on the floating home, guests can keep warm next to the wood stove.

In addition to providing heat to The River Den, the wood stove is also the cooking unit for the home. When staying here, expect to strip things down to the basics.

The tiny kitchenette is situated near a gorgeous handcrafted circular window. There isn’t a bad view in the home.

By far one of the most unique features in The River Den is the pump sink.

According to the Airbnb listing, “in the winter months, there is no running water, but the drain in the sink still works and therefore can still do dishes, etc. We ask that guests warm a pot of water on the woodstove to have hot water for doing dishes.”

Standing in the kitchen, you have insanely gorgeous panoramic views of the water and nature around you.

From this view, you may notice the steel-grated ceiling above the dining room table. This unique design allows heat and fresh air to flow up to the sleeping loft; it also lets sunlight stream into the main living space from above.

In true ‘off-the-grid’form, a sawdust toilet is extremely eco-friendly. Simply use the restroom, cover with sawdust, and dispose of the bag once it’s full.

Access the sleeping loft via a small staircase near the dining room table.

The cozy sleeping loft fits a queen-size bed, lots of windows for light and fresh air, plus a few built-in shelves for storage. Notice the steel-grate floor for airflow and heat.

The River Den is all about relaxation. Head out to the front deck to sunbathe during the day or stargaze at night.
