The Innermost House is located in the mountains of northern California near the coast. At just 144-sq-ft, the home is much more than meets the eye from the outside.
The builders and designers, Diana and Michael Anthony Lorence, wanted a retreat that would provide a space for reflection and conversation. It is surrounded by beautiful trees and views of nature from all angles.
The small but wide front porch is the perfect place to sit, relax, and bask in the silence. The porch faces south to ensure maximum sunlight.
The main living area of the Innermost House is 77-square-feet of total elegance.
The simple furnishings encourage guests to sit, relax, and converse with one another. Enjoy a nice glass of wine or morning cup of coffee while engaging in wonderful conversation with even better company.
The fireplace isn’t just for warmth; there is also a kettle for heating water, and it is the only source for cooking food. The owners wanted to have a reminder of a more “ancient lifestyle.”
There is no electricity in the Innermost House, so the home is lit by either rays of sunlight, flames of the fire, or the flicker of candlelight. All of this keeping with the goal of the home being a mindful, calm, and peaceful sanctuary.
Opposite the seating area is a bookcase that takes up the entire wall filled with carefully selected books that keep with the theme of the home.
Hidden behind the bookcase is a small study — the ideal place for guests to read, write, or reflect.
The bathroom is small, modest, and simple. The toilet is on a septic system; however, they try to use as little water as possible.
Since all of the cooking is done over the fire, the kitchen has been stripped to the bare minimum without compromising on luxury.
There is counter space for food preparation and cabinets for pantry goods and appliance storage. The deep sink makes it easy to wash fruits, vegetables, and do the dishes after dinner.
Looking up above the living space, the 12-foot cedar ceilings provide room for the spacious sleeping loft.
With enough room to stand, the sleeping loft is simple, comfortable, and uncluttered. There is even a small closet for more storage space.
At first glance, from the outside, the Innermost House looks like your typical, small, rustic log cabin. But inside, it’s a meditative retreat.
