For some people, having a fence and some security cameras isn’t enough. They really want their homes, and the valuables inside, to be as safe as possible. But how can you take hiding your valuables to the next level?

There is one answer: with secret rooms and compartments.

And we’re going to take a look at some pretty genius secret compartments and rooms from various homes.

A padlock or combination safe is no good if it’s just out in the open. That, and people have some growing fears that robbers tend to get craftier.

That’s why clever hiding spots are so attractive to some homeowners,

Count how many functioning drawers you think there are.

Well, there’s more than you think. Every drawer seems to have a separate drawer underneath it, and extra compartments are hidden to look like they’re part of the side-panels.

The example here uses it to hide some knives, but you could hide something else in there as long as it fits.

Moving onto something a lot larger, here’s a secret room unveiled by a collapsing floor panel!

This roughly 6-foot-long section of the floor collapses downward and transforms into a short flight of steps. While that happens, it raises a guardrail around it so nobody falls in.

Now you have access to a room at the bottom. Maybe you could make it a wine cellar or a movie room. At least you have privacy!

And what if you want to hide something that’s essential in a home, but is big and makes things look messy?

Like, say, a washing machine. The sight of a washing machine can stick out like a sore thumb in some homes, so this home has a clever panel in the wall to hide one. So you can have your cake and eat it too.

This next one is also a wall-panel, but its purpose is more for fun than for function.

It’s a secret desk under the stairs.

Much like the living space Harry Potter had to make do with, this little office makes the most out of the underneath of a staircase. Designed by Matt Risinger, it actually looks pretty cozy. I sure wouldn’t mind working with a station like this.

But if you actually wanted to hide something that you could easily access whenever, then you’d want it near the bed, right?

Intruders are most likely to break in at night, and bed is where you’ll probably be when that happens.

This bed by Stealth Furniture has a headboard that turns into a storage compartment.

Use it to store some weapons if you feel like. Any home intruder won’t know what’s coming for them.

Or you could use it to store snacks so you don’t have to walk all the way to the kitchen for a midnight snack.

Now, this last one is the fanciest looking of them all. It’s the Italian Royal Desk by RAU Antiques.

The desk is filled to the brim with secret compartments or drawers. In case you’re writing to the parliament and suspect that one of your trusted bodyguards is a spy, you know?

At least if you have any plans to start your new life as a covert or secretive person, you’ve got options.
