As kids, we all grew up with Dr. Seuss’ books. From The Cat in The Hat to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, everyone has a favorite.
Dr. Seuss’ books can’t seem to be easily forgotten.
There’s something really special about them.
And they are definitely written in such a way that they enhance children’s imagination, making them want to explore the world around them in ways others haven’t thought of before.
Or maybe this does not only apply to children, but also to adults.
Like Alaskan attorney Phillip Weidner.
Weidner built a house that looks like it’s taken straight out of one of Dr. Seuss’ books.
Although this was not originally the purpose, it has ended up being the most iconic sight in the area.
The Goose Creek Tower
It is the most unusual house we’ve seen so far.
Phillip Weidner is one of the top attorneys in Alaska, and that’s exactly why it took him about two decades to build the house in question.
He was too busy to work on this project, so he just took it easy, and little by little, he built a 14 to 17-story tower, all depending on how you want to get to the top.
What he now calls a “poem to the sky”, started off as a 40 by 40 two-story log cabin.
However, when that was completed, Weidner felt that for some reason it was not enough.
He could do better (and higher) than that.
By that point, the engineer he has inside took over; let’s not forget that he has an engineering degree from MIT. So, he just had to build higher.
Weidner calls himself “a frustrated architect”.
And it seems that it is this personality that wanted to build a tower to touch the sky. In fact, there are several reasons why he chose to build such a tall house.
One of the two most popular goes that the construction of the house started after a big fire.
So, when the surrounding trees started growing taller and taller, he had to make the house taller to be able to see the majestic view of Denali.
The second one is that he wanted to put a telescope at the top and also put a ham radio station to broadcast what he called “Radio Free Goose Creek.”
In any case, the tower was built and it is now one of the most amazing buildings that you’ll ever see.
And, as the builder says, “I want to be able to see”.
Well, mission accomplished!
As for why he stopped at 17 stories and didn’t go any higher?
The house is 185 feet tall.
200 feet is federal air space.
According to Weidner himself, he wants the tower to inspire people, not necessarily to build stuff, but inspire them to do worthwhile things in their lives.
