You just relieved yourself. You are relaxed and feeling lighter. Everything seems like it’s going fine until you flush the toilet.
You realize what you just left in your toilet isn’t going down.
The toilet is clogged and you start to sweat because you know you don’t have a plunger. The astronomical cost of hiring a plumbing starts running through your mind and it’s the second thing that is making you nauseous aside, from your smelly bathroom.
Well, you don’t have to panic or call a plumber. You may be able to unclog that toilet all on your own.
As long as you have some dish soap, bleach, or a coat hanger, you might have a fighting chance against that clog.
You’ll definitely want to at least attempt these methods before calling in a plumber. Here are 3 DIY ways for unclogging a toilet without a plumber.
Before you begin, it’s always best to turn off the water valve before you start to prevent more water from filling up in your tank. It’s that metal oval shaped knob at the base of your toilet. You can also prevent overflow by pulling up the float ball or chain in your toilet’s tank.
Hanger Method
Straighten out a wire hanger and place it into the trap-way to try and break up and loosen the clog so that you can flush it through. Turn the toilet valve back on and flush your toilet. Be careful not to scratch the porcelain of your toilet.
Paper Towel Method
Take a wad of paper towel and stuff it into the trap-way of your toilet. Squeeze out a significant amount of dish soap into your toilet. Let the soap seep into the paper towel for about 20 minutes.
Pour a bucket of hot water into your toilet bowl. The soap will work it’s way through the toilet bowl to loosen the clog. Turn the toilet valve back on and flush your toilet.
Shampoo Method
Pour a generous amount of shampoo into your toilet. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then add a gallon of very hot, but not boiling, water into the bowl. Let it sit for a few minutes. Turn the toilet valve back on and flush your toilet.
Bleach Method
Pour about 2 to 3 cups of bleach into your bowl, then add one cup of powdered dishwashing soap. Let the solution sit for 10 minutes to loosen the clog. Turn the toilet valve back on and flush your toilet.
