Did you know that some of the common items we find around our house and do double duty? While they are specifically made to solve one household problem, they can be perfectly useful for another.
After checking out these common uses for household products, you may be able to cut down on the items you have to buy for your home.
Here are some of our favorite secondary uses for household items:
Sweater Pills
I bought a sweater pill remover the other day that cost $7. Seven… damn.. dollars. Little did I know I could have just pulled out the three pack of sponges under my sink and used the abrasive side to de-fuzz my clothes.
Faster Sprouting
Use sandpaper to gently scratch the surface of your coated seeds to help is sprout faster. The abrasions will allow the water to seep into the seed faster.
Protect Clothes With a Pillow Case
If you have to store a coat or a blanket for the season, you can cut a hole in a pillow case so that the hanger can fit through and cover your garment with the pillow case.
Absorb Odors
Use a piece of charcoal in your room, a drawer or a refrigerator to absorb stinky scents.
Free a Stuck Zipper
If your zipper is stuck, you can rub a bar of soap along the front and sides of the teeth of your zipper. Shimmy the zipper up and down so that the soap lubricates the teeth and makes it easy to pull up and down.
Soften Paintbrushes
If you have nylon paint brushes that have become stiff with gunk, you can soak them in hot vinegar for 30 minutes before rinsing them in hot soapy water.
Add a Key to a Key Ring
If you need to add a key to a key ring, use a staple remover to separate the sides of your key ring which will help you slide a new key on.
Foil to Sharpen Scissors
Fold a few sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil and cut through it to sharpen the blades of a dull pair of scissor.
Fasten a Bracelet With a Paper Clip
Straighten out one end of a paper clip. Slip the hook through the jump ring of your bracelet and hold the straightened end in your hand. Bring the other end over to clasp it to the jumper ring.
Shine Chrome Fixtures
Use car wax to shine the chrome fixtures in your home.
Open a Stubborn Jar
If you’re having trouble opening a jar, use rubber kitchen gloves to help you get a better grip.
Clean Windows With Coffee Filters
Spray glass cleaner on your windows and wipe down with a coffee filter for a streak-free shine.
Mayo For Water Rings
Cover your water rings on wooden furniture generously with full-fat mayonnaise and let it sit for a few hours before you wipe it up. This will remove the stains.
Plastic Milk Jug Scoop
Cut up a milk jug and use it as a scooper to scoop cat food or nails.
Rubber Band For a Better Grip
If the top of your screw has been stripped you can place a rubber band between the screw and the screwdriver to get a better grip.
