Do you ever wonder what happens to all the brave men and women who served in the armed forces of our country when they return back home? Is it easy for them to be back or do they have a place they can call “home”?
This article will focus on these amazing people who so selflessly endanger and sacrifice their lives for our safety and peace, and their well-earned right to have their own place, even if it’s tiny, to be able to return to.
A group of veterans in Kansas known as Veterans Community Project decided to help out other veterans that were homeless, building a small community of tiny houses for them. The Veteran Village is comprised of about 50 tiny homes about the size of a studio apartment.
According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, about 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans, and based on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the majority of homeless veterans are male with only 9% being female.
Henry Owen a U.S navy veteran said to CNN, “You feel a sense of desperation, loneliness“. Owens who was homeless for eight years also added, “I had no hope“. Now, he found his hope in the Veteran Village, living among his “people”.
This amazing and life-saving project started by Chris Stout, a veteran himself who after an injury during his service in Afghanistan had to return home to a new reality. He suffered from his injury and PTSD and he started feeling better being among other veterans.
However, upon seeing the dreadful conditions some of these veterans lived under, he decided to do something about it. In 2015, Chris along with some of his friends started the Veterans Community Project that offers housing and support services to all the veterans that ask for help. As their introductory message on their webpage says, “we’re here for everyone who took the oath to serve America“.
The veterans apart from their tiny house, they are also provided with food and all the necessary things to keep a healthy lifestyle. In this way, they can finally be in a safe and secure environment where they can enjoy some much need privacy.
The Village is still under development as more tiny houses will be added. Furthermore, they are hoping to add a central community center where the veterans will be able to socialize, receive weekly educational classes, wellness counseling, and psychological support.
The housing offered is basically tiny houses that are ideal for a single person or a little bigger to host a small family. In the video, we can have a look in the interior, as we can see there is a small yet fully equipped kitchen, with a stove, a microwave, a sink, and a full fridge. There is a small bathroom and a sleeping area, with a twin-sized bed and a desk.
This initiative to help these veterans is utterly inspiring and admirable! If you would like in your turn to show your support, don’t hesitate to contact them via their official webpage or their page on Facebook and ask how you can help. This project wouldn’t have happened without the support of people and Kansas City, so a big applaud to them!
