What would you do if you lost everything you owned and were left with only the clothes on your back and $300 in your pocket?

Would it be to move to another country altogether and build your own perfect home?

Well, that is precisely what Vicki did after her home was destroyed by the 2011 earthquakes that shook New Zealand. She took the plunge and left the country with the few things she had left, and moved to Australia to rebuild her life. She designed her home “The Opposite of Chaos” and hasn’t looked back since.

Though the tiny house movement had been something she considered in the past, it wasn’t until tragedy struck that she finally decided it was for her.

After losing all the possessions she had spent her life collecting, and the home she stored them all in, Vicki decided that, in the end, she really didn’t need all the things she had been holding onto. As long as she had a place to rest her head, and a garden to sit in and enjoy, she could be at peace.

Luckily for her, after a while of searching, she found the perfect place to set up home… on a permaculture farm in a small community of tiny homes.

Vicki’s house is situated on a small plot of land that backs onto a tropical rainforest, giving her an absolutely amazing view, and it faces into the farm where a small number of other tiny homes have settled. With a mix of tiny homes, container homes, and caravans, Vicki is happy to be able to interact with her neighbors when she wants to, and have time to herself when she wants.

The house is 7.2 meters, or 24 feet in total but also has a large outdoor patio area where Vicki likes to spend her time.

While her home is very small, Vicki has everything she needs to live comfortably; a kitchen, living room, bathroom, and loft bedroom, all kept bright and welcoming with an abundance of windows. She wanted her home to be light and airy and achieved that through her beautiful handcrafted wallpaper, brass appliances, and by choosing a pastel teal color as her accent.

Despite the small size, Vicki has huge amounts of storage space and room to display some of the few knickknacks she has acquired since moving in.

Being surrounded by the large permaculture farm, and the rainforest, means that Vicki can freely roam the grounds and pick beautiful fresh flowers to accentuate her space with extra color and beauty. Not only is her own space relaxing, but the community also has an open air yoga studio and a treatment room for massages and acupuncture.

Vicki has named her home “The Opposite of Chaos” and the space she has created is absolutely that.

Warm, inviting, fresh, and breezy; her home is her sanctuary, and Vicki couldn’t be happier.
