Remember, not that long ago, when people had big, bulky glass-tube televisions? They might have been gigantic, but at least a little glass cleaner was all you needed to have it sparkling.
Many of us today have upgraded to the more modern flat screen TV, and although they are sleek, have great picture quality, and save space – they’re a bit of a pain to clean. One wrong move and it’s ruined!
Here are 5 ways to clean your flat screen television without causing any damage.
Most of the time, all you’ll need to do is wipe the screen down with a microfiber cloth, but if you need more heavy-duty cleaning, these tips are your new best friend.
1. Vinegar
What can’t vinegar do? It pretty much has a million uses and is a wonderful, natural cleaner. To clean your flat screen, first, wipe it down with a microfiber cloth, then mix a solution of equal parts distilled water and vinegar. Dip the cloth in the mixture and wring out as much liquid as you can, wipe the cloth against the screen very gently, then wipe again with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
2. Dish soap
Dawn dish soap is another amazing product that can be used for many things around your home. If your television has a special treatment on the screen, like many Panasonic brands, you can use a bit of dish soap.
“If the surface is particularly dirty, after cleaning up the dust, soak a soft, lint-free cloth in diluted, mild liquid dish soap (1 part mild liquid dish soap diluted by 100 times the amount of water), and then wring the cloth to remove excess liquid. Use the cloth to wipe the surface of the display panel, then wipe it evenly with a dry cloth of the same type until the surface is dry,” it says in their owner’s manual.
3. Screen cleaners
If you’re looking for something a bit more convenient or pre-made, there are plenty of flat screen television cleaning solutions available on the market. Be careful to research the brand of your television to make sure that you’re able to use these types of solutions on the screen.
4. Rubbing alcohol
If your microfiber cloth isn’t able to remove any smudges, mix a solution of half water and half rubbing alcohol. Dip the corner of a soft, cotton cloth in the mixture, squeeze out any excess liquid, and gently wipe down the screen. Afterward, wipe with another clean, dry cloth.
5. Petroleum jelly
Sometimes our fragile flat screen television screens can become scratched, luckily, they can be fixed with a little petroleum jelly. Just grab a cotton swab, dip it in some petroleum jelly, and gently dab the scratch. WikiHow has a couple of other ideas on how to remove scratches.

- Never use harsh chemicals. “Do not use any chemical products on an LCD screen. Especially do not use a common window cleaner (Windex, etc.) or anything with alcohol or ammonia in it. These are going to mess up the protective layer on your fancy TV screen,” Digital Innovations says.
- Don’t spray products directly onto the screen. Spraying any sort of cleaning solution, natural or not, directly onto the screen can cause permanent damage and streaking. Instead, spray the solution directly onto the cloth.
- Never clean the screen while your TV is on. It’s best to have your television off for around 15 minutes before cleaning, otherwise, evaporation from the warm screen will cause streaking from your cleaning products.
