Summer is just around the corner – and for grown-ups, you know what that means.

No, we’re not talking about beaches or lounging under the sun, or having backyard barbecues.

Well, at least not yet.

We’re talking about that big house project that you’ve put on the shelf because you told everyone you’ll do it in the summer.

This couple stayed true to that commitment, especially with their home’s 20-year-old secret.

Undertaking a massive DIY

In a video posted by the p00lguy ML on YouTube, he showed the journey of Sabrina and Andrew Pougnet as they worked on a mammoth home renovation project.

When they got their house, they noticed a very large deck installed in the backyard. While decks are good to have, this one was hiding something.

It was a buried swimming pool.

When the couple discovered one of their house’s original amenities, they knew they had to restore it to its former glory.

It’s not going to be easy, though. Good thing that renovation and house design is the couple’s passion.

What seems to be an intimidating project for some is just another “project to be done” for them.

The first step? Clearing the boards.

Sabrina admitted that this was one of the most difficult parts of the project as the wood boards were heavy.

But once they were out of the way, they were welcomed with a sight any lesser person would run away from.

Imagine seeing brackish water that’s been sitting idle for the past two decades. The water underneath the deck was more of sludge than anything else.

Sabrina said that it was easy to get rid of it as long as you don’t imagine what the “black stuff” is.

They removed the rotting lining underneath after they pumped the water out. They shoveled the remaining sludge so they could start with the panels.

Once empty, they worked on the walls.

They sanded down the rust before painting the walls with a new coat of protective paint.

Every step is laborious but if you’re doing it with someone you love, then the work is easier.

Challenge #2 – making it functional.

This meant that Andrew had to dig up all of the pool’s existing pipes for the filtration system.

Once they finished replacing the rotted pipes, they called in the concrete truck. They lined the edges of the pool with concrete to seal everything in.

Then, they called on a team of lining installers to finish the pool and another team to fill the pool with water.

A project more rewarding than most

There’s something really satisfying with projects that are done well but this one is a bit more rewarding.

Instead of a deck, the couple now has a pool to cool down in during the summer season.

People were amazed at how they completed the project and we are too.

The team of two, or four if you count the supervising dogs, transformed an abandoned concrete hole into a perfectly restored pool.
